Greg,
That put a rather unfortunate image into my head... And it didn't involve doctors in lab coats slaving over a cold microscope... ;-) Enjoy, M. |

I've purchased and watched both sets and these two Mentalist are nothing short of true professional. Not only do they do awesome effects, but more important is watching how they handle and treat their audience members. They both teach far more than just tricks. I'm better for having bought them, Thanks Guys!

Both sets are highly desirable. I would endorse the view of several others here, and invest in the Osterlind DVDs first, and then the Banachek set. We are truly spoilt when two such high quality sets of material, from two great performers, are available to us all to learn from. And let's hear it for the great team at L&L who create such first-class quality productions. It's a LOT of hard work.

Yes, the Osterlind #1 DVD is out of stock, but will be available again, "soon." Anyone care to prognosticate when that will be? (Please forward all sealed envelopes to my PM box...)

I vote for the Osterlind DVD's!!! No one should buy the Banachek ones and should, instead, buy, not just one, but THREE sets of the Osterlind videos!!! That way, not only do I get fame and fortune, but I also will be solely privy to the goldmine of material in Banachek's!

When I buy Dvd's or books I'm not actually intending to copy the routines, Like Mr Osterlind says, start with the effect, so I'm mostly trying to collect methoids that will help me create my own effects, so I usually end up an near panic stations that a certain dvd collection or book will go out of print before I get a chance to purchase it. Personally I'm gladpeople like Mr Osterlind and Banachek are on our side, imagine what they could do if they used thir powers of evil.
The only effect I directly copy is Mr osterlinds bank night, I enjoy it so much and have a great time performing it, I enjoy it as much as my audience.

I do a completely different bank night based on Richard's idea. I use four envelopes with one person. I hand them the envelopes to inspect feel make sure they are sealed and give them choices. They take the first envelope I say " Ok wecan finish this now I will sawp you these three envelopes for that one you have"..the tension builds and I take it from there. Unlike Richard's effect I win they lose. I use this as a demonstration as to how we all think we are making conscious descisions yet sometimes others are manipulating us giuding our every move shaping our perceptions. It suits my needs. Richard's DVD's are fantastic I don't have Banachecks yet. But most likely will sooner or later.

I have given a lot of thought to this question, and it has been very difficult, mainly because both are extremely nice guys and therefore to choose one over the other would be like choosing which puppy you had to drown first.
I thought I would apply some thinking and add a reply that didn't just say which one to buy, but add why. Each performer approaches from a different angle. Richard Osterlind has a slightly less 'psychological' approach to his presentation and has a cheeky, fun quality to it that makes you want to watch over and over again. Banachek has a very slick look and uses the 'psychological edge' to gain information from the participants in many situations. Different performers, different approach, both brilliant. I would rate the Banachek DVDs as slightly more difficult (note: this is based on the set as a whole, not individual DVDs). This is because of the third DVD in the set, which is simply brilliant. Osterlind responds with the Breakthrough Card System in brilliance, yet in terms of learning, it is probably easier than muscle reading. The simple answer is to get both sets, no argument. However, not everyone is in the situation to be able to afford them. If you have to choose two DVDs as a starting point then pick up the first in each series. If you are in the unfortunate situation of only being able to buy one, then I suggest you flip a coin, but write your prediction on a billet beforehand. |

I would suggest you get both also. If you have to get just one at a time youmight start with Volume #1 of Osterlinds. A ton of usefull effects on one DVD. The old saying is if you get one effect out of a book (or other media) than the price was worth it. Well what if you get 6 effects from one place? How much would it be worth to you then. Richard's work on the Center T--- is amazing as is his work with the N--- W-----
Then get the first volume of Banachek and work with that one. you can only practice one or two things at a time anyways.. Good luck and I hope I helped Shaun R.
