I'm looking for a flower that retracts into the stem and wanted to see if anyone can point me in the right direction. This is for a play, not a magic act. Specifically, the script calls for a fantasy character to eat a lily. It's not a major point in the story and doesn't have to look "realistic," but it does lead to other action.
We can make this in our own shop (a tube with a slider device, yadda yadda yadda...), but I wanted to see if such a thing is already available before making it. Thanks very much!

Why not REALLY EAT THE FLOWER (make a fake out of edible cookie material).

George,
Ask a drummer for a worn out brush. Once you see it, I think you can take it from there. Even new ones aren't expensive but you don't need two! Good Luck! Bob Magic By Sander |

Thanks, Bob. That's a great idea! It's basically the same mechanism.
Pete, thanks much for the idea, but we would need to make 17 (one for each performance), plus about 10 more for rehearsals. Although cake flowers are fairly straightforward to make, we'd rather have a fake device.

George:
Another option is contact Richard Hughes of Hughes Magic (www.hughesmagic.com). He is considered an authority on feather flowers and will either have what you want or will be able to point you in the right direction. He also posts regularly here at the Café, so you can PM him. Ron |

Blooming flower. I think two different sizes. You can get them from here: http://www.mingusmagic.com

Thanks for all your ideas. The latest on this is that the director decided to cancel the bit, as he felt it would have called too much attention to the "eating" and create other continuity problems. So, the character is just miming it. Not a problem -- happens all the time in this line of work.

Yes, I do make a blooming flower. Probably was out of your budget had you kept in it the show. But check out the website if you would like more information for possible future needs.

Richard,
Thanks for the lead. I tried your Web site today a couple of times but got only the "site not found" message... could be a loose photon somewhere in the Force, or a byte out of place in the Websphere. I'll give it another shot tomorrow.

Thanks for your note. This is weird. Just now I cut-and-pasted the URL from your signature onto the address window and tried it. Got a "Page not found." Then I tried Google and clicked on the link. Nothing. Then I tried Yahoo and clicked on the link. Got a "Page not found" again.
I guess my ISP doesn't want me to look at your site? ![]()

There are also a variety of real flowers that are edible (GOOGLE "edible flower"). One must be careful to see which parts of the flower can be eaten, how much, and so forth, as well as considering whether pesticides might be involved. Probably easier just to get a gaffed one... (and don't eat a real lily!)
