If people are thinking of using this for close/up walk around I honestly think a few challenges may arise. When performing close up/walk around my guess is 90% of people will perform at least one trick with a normal regular deck, cards signed etc. it will just then seem a little odd introducing this deck for this effect when really you should be doing this effect with your deck you have been using all night (that’s assuming someone performs an effect using the supplied deck). Personally if using regular cards in your set, I would stick to a demonstration using the esp cards, poker chips or chipping your own objects.
Spectator management will be a big one and I think a lot of testing will be needed with a friend, wife etc to know the safe distance you can be from the spectator give and take them moving around a little, other people walking back and forth etc (just like it is in the real world) at weddings/parties in particular. The one for me is the monitor. People are always watching you especially when performing and from all angles, quite often than not without you realising. If people are thinking of palming it to get the peek I would be very wary of rigging it in and out without and suspicion arising. This is where I personally feel insight has a upper hand being able to feel the vibrations not having to look at a monitor. What would be amazing for a Version 2.0 or monitor upgrade is the ability for the monitor to have a vibration function so you could toggle between visual peek or vibration. eg 1 for circle, 2 for cross etc and even be programmable (like insight). There’s pros and cons to both insight and this, guess it’s just weighing everything up to what people feel is best and practical given their performing conditions and environment. |

One of my friends received this for testing and I had the opportunity to play with the props.
No doubt (IMO) the BAT has a few limitations, both in terms of handling of the prop as well as during performance. However the BAT has TWO unique features unseen in other similar props/devices. It has two very useful (just IMO) modes which can blow minds. The two modes are (1) Gambler Mode & (2) Reverse Mode. However for reliable reading of the cards/sensors (in Gambler/Reverse i.e. Sensor modes), the power (intensity) of the reader needs to be reduced thus compromising on the range between the cards/sensors and the reader. Gambler Mode: In this mode, one can select and deal cards for up to 5 players and can deal up to 5 cards for each player. You will know exactly which player has the winning hand. Also, if desired, you can tell what cards each player has been dealt. Reverse Mode: This is a very versatile mode and makes use of the 5 tiny sensors made available. These sensors can be place in any object/objects and the object(s) is placed in a container. You will know which object has been picked up from the container. It can detect each object correctly in order when picked up one at a time. The only issue I have is the size of the reader as well as its reduced range for certain applications, like the two effects mentioned above. I don't find myself comfortable hiding the reader in a card case or in my back pocket when in the near vicinity of object being detected when in reduced range. One has to find ways of hiding the reader better and to be effective when the reader is in reduced range. These are just MY thoughts and opinion. I will prefer not get into a debate on the above. Take it if you like it or let's move on. Thank you.

What really bothers me about most e-tricks is the use of rechargeable batteries that cannot be replaced by the user and are often not yet commercially available. Such an expensive investment should remain functional for a very long time under well-maintained circumstances. I would even prefer commercially available button cells or other small, high-performance batteries, which cause slightly higher follow-up costs but can be removed and replaced at any time without always having to remember to regularly recharge the batteries. And what happens if the manufacturer no longer exists after a short time? Then it will be really tight with a battery exchange, besides there are always additional costs for shipping back and forth !

I got "scientific" and, using a precision caliper, I measured the thickness of the Phoenix deck provided with Insight and a standard Phoenix deck. Both decks were measured with just the 52 cards (no jokers or advertising cards). Here are the results:
Standard Phoenix Deck: 0.6145" thick Insight Phoenix Deck: 0.6795" thick I then removed individual playing cards from the Insight deck until it was the same thickness as the standard Phoenix deck. I had to remove 5 cards from the Insight Phoenix deck to get that down to 0.6150" thick. As previously mentioned, the Insight Phoenix deck will fit into a standard Phoenix deck tuck case without the jokers. Just the 52 cards. The reason... A standard Phoenix deck comes with 4 extra cards.. Two jokers, a blank card, and an advertising card. So, a 52-card pack of the Insight Phoenix deck is roughly the same thickness as a standard Phoenix deck WITH its included extra cards. I had the opportunity to perform a little effect with the Insight deck for a couple of fellow magicians last night. The person handling the cards immediately asked if the cards were plastic. I simply replied, "Yes, I got some plastic cards so they don't get ruined when performing at places like this (we were in a diner). They are waterproof." The magicians completely bought that explanation! So will most spectators! Mark

I perform this asking the spectator to mix the cards “Vegas” style by spreading thff e.g. m on the table and mixing th egg n around. Then I have them or 3 total spectators pick cards and place them in a box so that I can’t see the cards in case they are “marked” in some way. The box B I use has the “reader” in a false bottom. My pint here is that if the cards are handled individually the thickness is not noticed. If the cards are handled as a deck a smart card guy might notice. The idea of the cards being plastic is a good choice as well

The Insight deck has always interested me, especially since it can be paired with my PeekSmith, however it seems like it's no longer available. If that's not the case I'd love to know, but for those of us new to exploring this concept, it seems like comparing Insight to the BAT System is a moot point. Are there other options out there?

Did you get the impression that this system does in fact have dramatically more range than the other similar systems? For instance, do you think you could hide the scanner in a card box on a small table and then have the spectators just place their selected cards on the table? if it actually works then that would be an advantage over telling them to place them somewhere very specific like in a box (which is necessary with the short range of most systems.) |

However, this might not be possible under varied performing conditions. However, I have tried placing the Reader under a 1/2 Inch thick Plywood table and it works good. Also it works with the supplied 5 colored chips when in Reverse Mode, provided the chips are placed in a suitable size cardboard box kept on the table right over the hidden reader under the table. IMO, this is a much better way of using the Reader when seated on a table. The 5 colored chips can also be used as a Kurotsuke effect (Max Maven's effect but the electronic way) as well. One can exactly predict what color chip has been picked up by each of the 5 spectators. Start by predicting as to who has the BLACK chip. Then as a finale, predict the remaining 4 color chips as well . . . . and with that you made your day and your reputation. Hope that helps.

When performing table-hopping and when using the Reverse Mode, it will be much better to use a DIY simple hard cardboard box with the Reader hidden inside its base. The height of the box will vary depending on the size of the object (Colored Chips/Pens/Other object) placed in the box.

USTAAD - Are the BAT cards also plastic cards as the Hugo Shelly Insight Phoenix deck ?
"The Bat System is fast and precise. As soon as they select the card, you know exactly what it is." This means for me that the spectator can cover his card, because I already know the result - right ? |
