Yes, Bernard is a fantastic card magician.
I like in his version that the three cards are signed. There is another version, video by Bernard Bilis where the spectators think of three cards, these three cards disappear and appear in another pack. I can't find this video anymore. |

The Bernard Bilis version is brilliant. Obviously the fact that the cards are signed takes it to a different level from many other versions.
I love the way it is structured. It plays upon our natural habit of mentally filling in the gaps of what we see with what we think we know. For example, I knew the 3 cards did not disappear one by one. But initially I was completely baffled by how they disappeared at all with everyone watching as he cleanly inserted them. Only when I watched it again did I realise I had been completely fooled by my own assumptions. So, for me personally, I would say the beauty is in the timing, and psychological skullduggery. |

For me (performing for friends) my criteria would be -
Must end clean, if using gaffed cards. But ideally, just normal cards, for total examinability. Simple sleights that am unlikely to get caught doing. Strong misdirection. There needs to be something "extra" rather than just "some" cards go from A to B. That could be an extra phase. Or it could be a single phase, but with the extra impact of the card(s) being thought-of, selected, or signed. The "basic" version from Royal Road has a very simple add-on move. I would maybe do that adding 3 cards, then a second phase to add some more. If I was going to force a number I would do that on the second phase. Another interesting idea is the standard gag about the hard part is to move them back again. It's a corny gag, but gets a laugh. But I have never seen anyone do a second phase where the cards DO move back. They always move more cards in the same direction. As I mentioned above I also like James Brown's version. It has two phases, each with a thought-of card. The second phase is done almost as an afterthought, when no one expects it. |

My favorite version of Cards Across is McCombical Cards Across. It's easy to do and so visual that you can perform it for kids. I think Fun, Inc. may still produce it. I have a set from them, but the cards need to be roughed properly. The roughing was too light to work. I'd probably make a set of cards using Hoyle Jumbos.

As an update I recently performed my variation of Steve Valentines Card In Flight originally by Paul Rosini for the first time at an actual gig.... It's still a work in progress but it definitely has potential.
