They seem to have discounted one of the most plausible candidates, W.E. Sanders for dubious reasons. That alone eliminates my desire to watch it.

I thought it was very well put together. It was interesting hearing about the different theories surrounding who Erdnase was.

It looks intriguing. And it really brings up further thoughts about my old childhood friend, DOC here.
He seemingly never looked at a card sharp as any such terrible person. He himself was a quite wonderful person, that I remember of him. He would always say to me, “God hate’s the sin, but loves the sinner.” I always figured it was the rationale that allowed him to sleep at night as to the gifted card sharp he became. Wonder what he would think of this new work, as for now, he most likely knows for sure who Erdnase is and is not.

How about we don't derail this topic with discussions about other people that have literally zero to do with the movie. If it is of interest, I suggest you start a new thread.

I realize mileage my vary, but It was a relative post, no need for a new a thread. I was speaking of the movie and my reflections as to its intrigue via a relative thought and practioner/ former member here as to some of its focus.

Having heard all discussions about Erdnase’s my vote was always E.S. Andrews out of Chicago to me he was the only one who fit the profile.

My issue with it is the fact that the producers determined to exclude one of the currently popular candidates for the identity of Erdnase while spending time on some which really should be dismissed altogether. In my opinion Milton Franklin Andrews has as much chance of being Erdnase as I have of running a "sub-4" mile. However, his story is very lurid and makes for great theater, what with the killings and such. So to me, the project is flawed. I'm not suggesting anyone NOT see it other than myself. In fact, I hope fans of the search for Erdnase check it out and draw their own conclusions. On a side note, it is interesting to see the impact Steve Forte's Gambling Sleight of Hand books have had on the whole discusstion of Erdnase. He makes what is to me a very good argument that whoever he was, he wasn't as knowledgeable about gambling as we've been led to believe. Maybe that is the biggest intrigue of all, pulling the wool over eyes for so many years.

That did strike me as a bit odd when they dismissed it just because the initials weren't S.W. But the documentary was more about the mystery of erdnase than finding who he was. So it's not a huge problem for me. |

He was in Chicago or thereabouts at about the right time, but beyond that, there isn't much there beyond the backwards name anagram, and the documented card game he played. He didn't leave behind any evidence whatsoever of having been an author. |

Forte's argument is indeed interesting, that Erdnase wasn't really as knowledgeable on gambling as he appeared to be. The late, great, Tony Giorgio had already postulated that in his Giorgio Letters column he penned for Genii back in the 1990s. Tony suspected Erdnase was a card magician with delusions of being a gambler who knew the moves at the card table. According to Giorgio, Erdnase knew too many moves. Real world card cheats only stick to one or two maneuvers that get the money, and that's it. Tony discussed Erdnase with many notable card cheats he knew from the 40s and 50s. They all gave him the same response that Forte pointed out in his book. |
