Here is another routine that I am really enjoying:
It is called...
MASTERPIECE
I remove a blank card and draw a line border around it. At the bottom, I write: "By [their name] and [KJ]" I then hand them the card and ask them to write two words That would be the title of a masterpiece painting. I give them examples, like "moonlit unicorn" or "Angry Dentist". The card goes in my wallet. I then take another blank card and draw a fancy frame around the border and proceed to draw the masterpiece. I then explain my "masterpiece" and then reveal their title card. They keep the two as a souvenir.

Nice! "Angry Dentist" LOL.

So many wonderful ideas shared on this thread. Thank you to everyone who has contributed something.
Here's another idea for using the SMCPD in a practical way.
Many people struggle connecting with others in person. On-line connections are easier, because there is little risk. But when we walk away from the computer, ipad or phone, go outside, and walk down the street and see other real humans we'd like to meet, making new connections can be very difficult for some, perhaps many. I know it was for me.
Something as a simple as a coin or card trick can be a wonderful way to break the ice and make an initial connection with another human being. And there can be real benefit in that. But what happens when the trick is over? How do you interact with that person? How do you start a conversation? Or keep the conversation going? Those are skills that need to be developed if you don't already have them.
Certainly reading and applying the concepts taught in How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie is very useful. Another excellent but not nearly as well known book that teaches how to connect with others is Intimate Connections by David Burns, M.D. Anyone who struggles to connect with others, who wants to make new friends, may find reading and applying what is taught in these two books to be life-changing.
For me, magic and mentalism has a place in my tool kit for connecting with others. Mainly because magic is a part of me, and has been for almost my entire life. So when I share an effect with another person, I am sharing a part of me. And that may be true for you, too.
Performing a magic trick is one thing. Connecting with and starting to take an interest in another person is another. I used to perform scotch and soda as way to break the ice and meet someone new. And I still love that trick. It is a great ice breaker. But when the trick is over, what happens then? Do you keep performing more tricks? Doing so doesn't demonstrate taking an interest in the other person.
But with a mentalism effect, you can break the ice in a way that is mysterious and fun, and also begin to get to know the other person a little, and in doing so start to take a genuine interest in them and who they are.
Any of us could (in theory) walk up to a total stranger, smile, confidently extend our hand and say, "My name is ________. I don't believe we have had the pleasure of meeting." Then shake their hand (or fist bump these days) and ask what their name is. But in practice, most of us would probably not be comfortable with this approach. It's much more fun to know we have something cool to share that which are very likely to respond positively to. And that is our magic.
Here is a routine I call Connect, that works well with the SMCPD.
You may be waiting in line for coffee. Or at a bus stop. Or waiting for an elevator. Or at a company team building event where all of the virtual workers suddenly find themselves in a room together. Or somewhere else - anywhere, really, where you see someone you would like to meet and potentially make a new connection, possibly a new friend.
Walk up and smile and say, "Think of some place you would love to visit one day. It could be a country. Or a city. Or a specific destination in a country or city. Don't tell me what or where it is, just think of it. Do you have a place in mind? Okay, good. Reduce your thought to one or two words (thank you, George Anderson) and write it down on the back of my card, but don't let me see what you write. I'll look away. When you're done, turn the card over and let me know you are done."
Take the card and insert it into the SMCPD, casually show both sides, and put it away in your pocket as you say, "I had you write your thought down because doing so locks the thought in your mind and makes it easier to focus. Think of the place you would love to visit one day. Imagine you are there now. Look around and see the sights. In your imagination, see the images and colors around you. Imagine what the weather is like. Smell the air. Is it hot? Warm? Cool? Cold? Imagine you can actually feel it right now. Is the wind blowing? Can you feel a breeze? Look around you. What do you see in your mind's eye? Don't tell me, just imagine it."
"All right, I'm beginning to pick up some very specific images, sounds and feelings..."
While they are vividly imagining their destination, you do the same, of course having peeked the destination they wrote down. Then slowly describe some of what you imagine. Having a good knowledge of geography and having some travel experience yourself would obviously be useful. In cases where you don't know anything about the destination, you can simply reveal the name.
Of course, you don't have to ask for a place. It could be anything about them and positive. A hobby they really enjoy. A dream they have for the future. Something about them.
And what happens at the end of the routine?
You've shared something about you. You just performed a mysterious, entertaining mind reading effect. They've shared something about them. If time permits, you can ask them to tell you more about the place/hobby/dream/etc. they have. Taking a genuine interest in the other person is the real secret to starting to build a connection with another human being. The magic simply gives you a fun and interest place to start.
If the bus or elevator arrives, or it's suddenly their turn to order coffee, you could hand them your card or offer to exchange contact information. I like to give them my card as it is more non-threatening than asking for their information. People are fascinated with palm reading, and handing them my palm reading card is nice way to end the brief interaction. "If you would ever like a reading, here's how you can find me." That works for me, because I love to give brief readings. Find what works and is a great fit for you, and do that.
"Only connect!" E.M. Forster

This is an excellent comment, and this is why I have a variety of "magic" in my arsenal. I do stage magic, parlor magic, close up magic, and social connection magic that falls into different categories:
I have some tricks that take just a few seconds that are designed to make a quick connection and create "a moment". for example, I am an elementary kids soccer referee. So, at the beginning of the game, I get a group of kids from each team together in center field and I tell them that I am going to flip this penny to decide who gets the ball. I then say the coin is a bit small, dirty, and hard to see. "Let me see if I can make it easier to see". I rub the coin and it turns into a jumbo three inch penny. Kids stop me on campus and ask me to do a magic trick. I always have 2-3 really quick tricks ready.
Another category is tricks that fit into a conversation. For example, my oldest daughter is studying psychology at Stanford U. I use that as a seque to show a psychology related magic trick, like some of those described in this thread.
So, food for thought, think of tricks that tie into common conversations about areas of common interest. I have tricks related to art, movies, food, pets, etc. So, in social situations, when the moment is right, I have a segue from a conversation that goes something like this: "Do you want to see something unusual about... (what we were just talking about)?"
A third category is something I learned from Jeff McBride. he incorporates magic into routine daily activities like giving a tip or waiting in line. I like to do "magic to myself", like practicing levitating when "nobody is looking" while I wait in the doctor's lobby. When they approach me and ask (and they do because when I came in, I was overly friendly), I pretend like it just looked wierd from their angle, it didn't really levitate. Then when they walk away, I do it again, a bit less subtle.
KJ
This is wonderful! I love your three categories.
Magic really is a fantastic way to connect with others, make conversations and interactions more interesting and mysterious - and create memorable experiences.

Doing mentalisim, it seems as if we are the ones with special powers. What if we were to gift our spectators a renewed belief in their own power of imagination? Through a small act of using their imagination, perhaps we can.
Imagination Into Reality:
Hand your helper a card that has a
1)
2)
3)
along with an implement for writing.
How good is your imagination?
1) Imagine I reach into my pocket and remove a coin, which pocket did I remove it from? The right one or the left one? Don't tell me, just write it down.
2) Imagine I set it down on the table, is it heads up or tails up?
3) Is it a copper coin or a silver coin?
After placing their card into the SMCPD, reach into the correct pocket, remove the correct coin, and set it down while covering it with a blank card to hide both the orientation and if it is copper or silver.
Remove their prediction from your SMCPD but before reading it state;
I took a coin from my left pocket (now turn their card over to be read), you predicted I would take it from my left pocket, you also wrote that the coin is Tails up and that it is a Copper coin. How did you do? Have them take the card off the coin to show they were correct with all 3 imagined thoughts.
~I feel there should be some sort of positive message about imagination should be on the underside of the card that was used for covering the coin. There are many a great quotes about imagination, but I have yet not decided on the correct one for me to use.
