Sigh.... how about an idea?
As a director and stage manager, I will create some performance themes for some escape artists we all know. First up Mario Manzini! He is first only because I just met him in Indy. I don't "know" him other than seeing him work, and listening to his lecture. Now, Mario while not tall, is really a "bar-bell boy", to "set the stage I am going to get two HUGE men. I mean guys who make Hulk Hogan look small. I would dress them in the manner of the Spanish Inquision, chain mail vest, black hoods, oil up their bods, etc. The stage is kinda like the first set of Man of LaMancha, in that it is a dungeon, with a set of stairs that go up and down. Music and lighting are going to be important here, along with the ability to lower the temp in the theater to give that "cold damp feeling". The opening would be those stairs lowering and Mario walking down in a pin spot, half way down the men shove him down the stairs the rest of the way. They would run down after him and rip the shirt off of him. As the stairs rose back up they would VERY ROUGHLY, with many blows of fist and foot, strap a collar on his neck then fasten VERY shiny crome chain to this. They struggle on both sides would be HUGE as they finally get the wrist and ankle bands on, and wrap and twist the chains around his body and fasten him. With a might blow they strike him to the floor. They lift him up, and hang him on a large meat hook between his legs. Mario hangs there without moving as the men move stage right (audience left, this is important) and light the coals to get the irons red hot.... ...the lights dim to a pin spot on mario, the light reflected off the chains... ....slowly, his head moves.... ...slowly, snake like, his body begins to move... slow turns that reflect the light... ....then, his eyes SNAP open, and he smiles. In lighting speed, first one arm is free, then the other, then the neck is free, he doubles up, grabs the hook, kicks free..... ...and then.... YOU TELL ME.... its gotta be better than the mud fight going on! I can finish this and do more if you'd like.... where do you want to go? |

Hmmm...too choreographed, like Copperfield's "Escape from Alcatraz."
Most escapes should look almost spontaneous, since the idea is to convey a sense of challenge and reality. An overly choreographed escape routine just looks like another "one-act-play" illusion. One exception would be the sub trunk, but then, that is usually presented as an illusion. Steve
