I am looking for routines and people with full mentalism acts that do not take this so seriously and believe they have powers so to speak.
The typical one liners or some dad jokes are fine if they are not the main things done. John Archer comes to mind for me for this. W eholse or what things can you think of? Is there someone in the "magic" world who might cross over just enough to even blur the line? |

I've seen performers with some great comedy in their act, but it was because the performer was funny. Colin Cloud, for example, gets a lot of laughs while he's on stage. His audience interactions are really funny because he's a funny guy.
Docc Hilford can be really funny when he wants to be (or deadly serious... dude's a great performer). Bob Cassidy did a lot of clubs and could get big laughs, though most of his recordings aren't that great. You can see the comedy come through in his writing. I'm not sure anyone else could really pull off their styles, though. |

If you are looking for routines I would recommend Cody`s Confabulation and Cody`s book test. And Sheer Luck has a lot of comedy moments.

From the "I have never performed it, but it's mentalism that always makes me laugh" category comes John Archer's Celebrity Dead *** -- marketed by Bill Abbot.
It's a very clever routine. Smart and seriously commercial. David

I personally think jokes and going directly for comedy in any act, if you are not a comedian is a bad idea.
A comedian know how to deliver a joke to make it work. I'm not a comedian and so don't have that sort of delivery. That's not to say that my act is all deep and heavy and claiming that's I'm someone special with greater powers than most. An act has to have light and shade in it or else you won't be able to tell the difference or keep the interest of the audience. As for whether the audience think I have special powers, I leave that up to them. I do an act: Watch it and make your own mind up. In my act I try to involve the audience as muchas possible so that it isn't all about me and how great I am. More a meeting of minds where strange things happen. Working with the audience, I have found that humour/amusement happens organically in dealing with them and that naturally creates the 'light' without forcing it. I think we can learn a lot from comedy shows here: There have been some great comedy shows that have sometimes flipped the gear and done something serious. (M.A.S.H. as just one example) If you can get the audience relaxed, entertained and laughing and then deliver the dramatic whammy that they were not expecting, it's knocks them for six. So my act doesn't include any jokes or one liners but has a lot of humore in it generated naturally in the less serious bits. Once I have the audience in this relaxed force sense of security, that is the time to deliver the OMG! moment. Also, a relaxed audience is far more off guard and not looking for how you do something as you are not actually doing something but chatting to them. (However, this is usually when you are doing most of the work. So, personally, I leave comedy to comedians and I'm not one of those, but my act does have lots of humour.

The whole act IS Mel Mellars being Mel Mellars. at the end, no one can even remember or care what the trick he was doing was. Mel Mellars IS a comedian. He can stand there and do nothing and have me rounding on the floor. He is that good! So unless someone does an impersonation of his whole act, they will never make it work. And then all they will be is a cheap immatation. As a side note, I have spoken with him off stage and what a stunningly professional, kind and nice man he is. He all-round freightenly good!

Not a big fan of comedy in Mentalism, but have to make and exception with Christian Painter and his wife Kat's Mind Tripping show out of Indy. Christian is funny as hell and is one of those people who is a natural comedian. A fantastic mentalism show and just the right amount of Christians subtle comedy touch makes this act so memorable. I can't think of a better mentalism show. Highly recommended. Comedy and mentalism don't normally mix at all, but Christian pulls it off so well.

For the corporate mentalist, especially for after-dinner shows, you have to have comedy or humor in your act. They want to feel good, there is often alcohol in play, and the best way to make a great show in such circumstances is to mix in some level of humor in your act IMHO.

Gil Eagles, one of the most successful mentalists of our time, had his audiences laughing all throughout his show. He amazed them with his mental abilities and kept them laughing along the way. He wasn't performing comedy effects, but he very effectively and tastefully used humor throughout his performance.

Add Harrison Greenbaum to the list. He may be seen as a standup comedian but his Magic/Mentalism background and performances are hilarious
