Hi,
I'm looking for some comedy patter ideas for the trick linking paper clips on a note, only as it's for a magic competition the rules are no dealers props, all the props used must be around the house objects and they must not be set up, and it must be able to do on a stage so reading through the old kids magic books I thought, hmmm, I could do this with giant p.cliops and an A4 piece of paper? I'm just looking for a funny patter/story to go with it. Thanks Matt |

Maybe something about wanting to perform one of those fancy linking rings routines but only having enough money for a couple of paper clips and a sheet of paper? Not particularly funny as is but perhaps a start for something better.

When is the competition?
What else do you intend to do and how long must your set be? The questions are aimed at getting an idea of the routine as this will make it easier to think up or find a humorous story for patter. Regards |

Maybe you could have a large bill with a picture of Abraham Lincoln. Perform the trick where the paper clips link and then finish by saying, "That's why they call him Abraham Linkin."

Thanks, competition is in September abc, 10-15 minutes long that can be used close-up or in a hall, everything must be ordinary household objects and only one trick maybe prepared in advance also the act must fit into a briefcase.

Read this site's story, I hope it gives you some ideas.
Best of luck. What do you mean by only one trick can be prepared? |

You can only make one trick, i.e. your own production box made from cardboard.
Thanks for the link (no pun intended). Matt |

Say, I got these from the local paper shop. It's the second paper shop that's been built there, the first one blew away.

Two paper clips on a roll of film: movie clips
Two paper clips on a painting: clip art When the paper clips fly through the air, "Hmmm, I thought they where supposed to be stationary." It might be funny to give them fancy technical names before producing them. "I just spent £200 on two 'Micro-fine, pressure-applying paperwork organising modules' look what I got." ON a different note I read somewhere about attaching streamers to them for a more visual effect, might look nice if you're using the giant ones on the A4 sheet. Hope this helps George |

Thanks these really help. I might incorporate the Abraham Linkin and clip art.

I've done it before, with price tags from an office supply store. You could put names or words on the tags, and have them link together. Then create a pun or joke from those two words or phrases. - Donald.

Abraham linkin? That is by far one of the stupidest jokes I have EVER heard. That is NOT funny. The bit that magic george said about the micro fine was funny. It would be funny after this bit to look at the audience and just deadpan say, "I frickin got ripped off" And by the way, most puns suck.

If you are good at delivery, you can use a pun successfully in your act. Of course you don't want to over do them, but there is a place if you are clever. And that's a gift. Sorry it can't be taught.

Yes, that's why I said most puns suck.
