Impressive tech, but it looks too mechanical. I think we're getting close to the point that, in the mind of the spectators, even the most impressive effects can be explained by technology, regardless of true method. Maybe a good thing for the engineering wizards who come up with this stuff(kudos to them), but what's going to happen when magic is no longer magical?

Let’s hope it’s better than the prototype disaster before.

Doesn’t look any different to WAKEN. I still have and love mine.
I would have felt bad posting this copycat here! |

Maybe this solves the breakage issue that WAKEN has for some. I like the idea of no string to break.

If there's an option to only reveal one card and there isn't a noise issue, then I'd be interested.

Rising card and single haunted card is the way to go. What improvements have been made, if any?

The thick thread of WAKEN never broke on my gimmick - it is not IT and hard to break. You could even exchange it for totally indestructible thread. You can riffle the gimmick pack now - wow. |

Ah, maybe. I thought I read somewhere that this was threadless but I could be wrong. You would think something would have to be different with this from WAKEN? Maybe the creators can chime in to answer?

The Penguin Magic Ad states:-
"This is Haunted Deck PRO - realistic, reliable, with nothing that may break. We have removed all the risky aspect of Haunted Deck, leaving you a strongest card effect." Hopefully, after the disastrous 'Waken' release, the creators have learnt a good lesson. It will be interesting to know as to how the many drawbacks of 'Waken' have been resolved. Hope 'The Haunted Deck PRO' will be a reliable gimmick as stated in the Ad. I will await an honest review. Quote:

Thank you for that Ustaad, it sure implies that there is no thread.

The principle and the method of operating the prop remains EXACTLY the same as 'Waken' but clever design eliminates most (almost all) of the drawbacks that were seen in 'Waken'. On the video the prop looked good and practical, and thus one could NOW concentrate on performance. Wish the same clever thinking had gone into while designing 'Waken'. The Ad for 'Haunted Deck Pro' seems to be quite honest. Hence, after a short Chat and Q & A session, I decided to purchase the item. The above are my thoughts & opinion based on video call. More when I receive the prop . . . till then . . .

Thanks for the reply Ustaad. I guess what I was trying to say is that the action here looks too smooth/perfect. To me, a haunted deck should look just like an invisible finger pushed open the deck and flicked the card out. Staggered, uneven and a bit sloppy. In other words, despite the organic prop(cards), there seems to be some kind of tech involved here. |

I fully agree with you Calvin. That's exactly how the haunted deck should look when performed. That 'one' card suddenly shooting out of the deck leaves a lasting impression in the minds of the spectator. And if need be, the simple normal deck can be examined while its lying on the floor. This is a very big advantage of our good old method(s), provided the performer has mastered the requisite skills to perform 'THAT' one effect WELL. But that's not the case (& IMO shall never be) with modern High Tech props and that's the reason such props are labelled as magic 'Toys'.
Here is one such way of using High-Tech when performing the Haunted Deck by combining 'the Old-n-the New'. The complete set-up remains same as the good old method. The 'THING' that makes the card suddenly pop-out is on a controlled pull using either a timer or better still an RC. In this case the performer can stand at a distance, away from the deck of cards that's about to go into action. Simple, easy & straight forward - And nobody will be any wiser. Sorry for being a BIT cryptic here.

I received the 'Haunted Deck Pro' today. I have played a bit with prop. Took as closer look at the mechanism. Here is my firsthand thoughts/opinion.
The 'Haunted Deck Pro' is a completely revamped version of 'Waken'. IMO, all the drawbacks of 'Waken' have been resolved. Said that: - Though the principle/method remains exactly the same as 'Waken', the functioning mechanism has been totally redesigned and changed. The whole mechanism has been encased in a very slim plastic (probably 3D Printed) rectangular box, thus there is nothing to breakaway during performance or otherwise. The motor, while in operation, is quite silent (may I say very silent) and almost vibration free. It has its own built-in protection when the thread is under excessive stress. However, under the excessive stress condition, the motor will emit a bit of noise, thus it’s a sort of warning to stop pressing the remote. Also, under excessive stress, the thread is not going to break easily. And by any chance the thread breaks, a small spool of replacement thread has been provided. Unlike in 'Waken', the thread used in this is quite smooth and very flexible - The right thread for the purpose. Using a simple but very clever method, the speed of the thread reel-in can be changed, thus giving a choice of 2 speed reel-in, while the motor's speed remaining unchanged. I wish I had thought of this simple but effective method of speed control. Since the whole contraption is encased in a plastic box (making it a robust unit), it does help one to perform the effect with ease and without any worries of thread entanglement etc. Besides the 4 & the 1 Card Haunted Deck versions, the 'Rising Card' effect in a goblet looks very magical. In 'Waken', many different effects/routines have been taught by Bond Lee. These are not taught in 'Haunted Deck Pro'. Thus, for good & practical routines I would recommend 'Waken' (ONLY for effects & routines). I must say a lot of thought has gone into designing & creating this [almost perfect (IMO)] little electronic gizmo. For all those who are interested in such gizmos, I would highly recommend the "Haunted Deck Pro". It is worth the asking retail price of $85. Just my thoughts and opinion after playing with the recently arrived prop.

Funny. I made a similar deck when I was 13 years old (i`m now 50) with a simple and strong t*'§"d to my pants (think animated matchbox.) Half of the deck was prepared (hole in the middle)
Worked fine - could control it with my pace - no batteries etc needed. Well. Too much high tech for my taste in this one. Too many things to think about. I want to keep it simple and focus on the performance ; ) My cent. Peace! |
