I am doing a routine where a ring vanishes from a ring box. I remove a small christmas tree from a tin, as well as a few presents. I want the ring to appear in one of the presents. The routine is scripted but the end is still up for grabs (I had the ring appear on a branch like an ornament, but it is in my opinion just too obvious. I had a few thoughts. One was to have 3 okito boxes made to look like 3 gifts, and load the ring into the one chosen by the spectator. Another idea is to use a nest of boxes, but the caveat is that the outer box would be small enough to fit onto the tin and be easy to load. Any thoughts or other ideas? I have a trick with no ending! Help!

Lippincott Box?

I thought of that, as well as the sing sing ring box (which is really cool but looks "magiciany"), but neither really look like a small gift box. The okito boxes can have a ribbon on top, but if I could find a small enough nest of boxes that look like a gift box, that would be preferable.

Make a little gift box with a ribbon, or use colored tape to make the Lippincott box look like a gift box (stripes) and a little bow.

The nest of boxes would be good if the ring fits.

Make a triple package:
A gift-wrapped envelope which contains a smaller piece of gift-wrapping containing the ring. Make it up like the nest of purses. Can load the ring as you take things out of the tin. pretty much packs flat. |

Can't an HPC type move load the ring under the box as it is being lifted/opened?

I saw someone do this - not my idea, not his either - anyway have a purse, the kind you squeeze and it opens and inside is any ring...a dummy ring. By now you have their ring in a rubber t---- t--. You open the purse and show the inside to someone other than the ring's owner and say "What do you see?" They'll say "a ring". You reach in with the t.t. inside the purse. Leave the t.t. inside the purse and bring out the actual ring.
Granted it isn't a box but a purse ending, but good. |

Thanks to all for your thoughts. I think I am going with 3 okito boxes, open and the bottom and a different colored bow on each. I will have the spectator choose one, shake the other 2 to show them to be empty, load to ring into the cbosen box and turnover move to reveal the ring in the box. Easy, and with the ribbon looks less like a magic prop!

Combining Julie and gregg's ideas, three boxes can be twice the diameter of the fake rings inside.
Each has a partition to form a trough and a flap on the side. Shaking the box one way will produce rattle and NOT dislodge the flap. Shaking it the other way will have no sound but does dislodge the flap. The, the two boxes not chosen, shaken with no sound and opened to reveal nothing inside. The selected box is shaken to produce a rattle, then opened and shown to another spectator. Then a side shake to drop the flap, reach inside with the palmed actual ring to be extracted with the box tipped to show the empty interior.

I immediately thought of a possibly easier way.
All three boxes have a fake ring stuck inside of the lid with tacky stuff. The none selected boxes are open to show the empty interior and the rings shaken out onto your lap or palmed The selected box is shaken to free up the ring for a rattle, then opened and shown to another spectator. The actual ring is 'extracted' with a Utility Move and the fake one dumped on your lap or palmed. No construction required and can be handled.

Great idea, funsway!
A little bow stuck on the top of each box would subtly lend another level of "acceptance". Julie |

Greg, some good thoughts. The Lippencott box is a nice box with a convenient way to load, but with the lock doesn't really fit my idea of a gift, and only using one box as opposed to three would change the feel of the trick.
Wravyn, I thought about the nest of envelopes (the commercial leather ones look great) The idea of wrapping paper would certainly fit the Christmas theme, but I would be concerned that it would be a bit fragile. I actually have a few tricks for coins with a nest of envelopes in my book, but never thought about applying that to a ring. Something to think about!! Ken, the color vision box might work, and worth looking into! Not sure about the Gozinta boxes, but never used them so I can only go by the listed effect. Julie, I agree - it would certainly make the box look like a gift! I found 1 inch multi colored flower bows, which can be affixed to the top of the box. Just waiting for them to arrive. Thanks again to all for your thoughts. I asked Craig Ousterling to see if he could put a color strip on his okito boxes, which have a nice design and look less like a magician brass box than the standard. I am thinking about the color vision boxes as well. I looked them up, and they come in different colors and are very inexpensive. Would have to see how easy it is to flip the tops to show an empty box. Might get both, see how both play! Thanks again to all, love brainstorming together. Even if I don't use your ideas, they help to clarify in my own mind how it would work, and the seeds are planted for future use with something else!!!

As Harry Lorayne used to write, "Afterthoughts", and Robert Klein used to sing, "Can't Stop My Leg", and we can't stop...How's about - Ring in a Lippincott Box and the KEY to the lock on the Lippincott box is in a small gift-wrapped box?

What is Robert Klein up to anyway? Someone give him a job! I guess you can put the key on the branch of the tree like an ornament, but still not sold on the idea. The color vision box is intriguing. They are inexpensive and available in different colors. Only one has a size listed but my guess is that they are all about the same size. If the plastic looks too cheap (and like a commercial magic trick), I can use Wravyn's idea of wrapping paper aand wrap each box on the sides. The top will have the bow, so won't need wrapping paper.
By the way, the coin connection is that after the ring vanishes and the tree is brought out, coins are produced (it's a gift of the magi type story that puts the whole trick together) that have images of Santa magically appear on them. They show Santa flying in on his sleigh, standing next to the tree, and placing a present under the tree. The spectator chooses one of the gifts, and that is the one with the ring.

The pattern creates an optical illusion so that the fact of "open" goes unnoticed, i.e. the half below the lid is already open on all three boxes. After one box is selected, the ring is inserted and the box flipped during the unwrapping of the ribbon. Some colors may work better that others, I can't test - and patterned contact paper on the sides and inside may enhance the illusion.
