Did you have a question?

What tricks do you currently do in your kid's show?

You have a ton of material in your list to choose from. Whether or not it goes over or not will depend on how good your presentations are and whether they are attuned to the age group you're performing for, as well as how confident you are with your material. All of these things get better as you perform them over and over and build up your performing experience. If you already do linking rings, Fantasy magician and Hobson balloon bag, as you've indicated, there's no reason these wouldn't be perfect for 9-year olds. Of course, if your presentations are weak and lack confidence, you may flounder. I would probably not do stuff that's extremely silly for this age group, like Peek-a-Boo Bunny. Rope stuff should be good, like Amazing Jumping Knot.

Honestly, I don't think you need to change too much for 9 year olds. Except for Peek-a-Boo Bunny your set list would be fine.

From you list of things you bought this year, the first thing I would work on is the misers dream.

Best Wishes!

Stop buying junk and learn how to be a magician. Magicians do routines. Magicians can walk into a room with a few things in their pockets and still be entertaining. Magicians are magic - not props.

That insane big list of tricks you have bought this year is more magic than someone could master in three lifetimes.

Start with ONE trick and master it. Know every word, every movement, every contingency for anything that could go wrong. Then repeat.

It all looks suitable for 9yr old's to me too if you drop the extremely silly ones.

Have you timed each one of the routines?

I would take the list and write the time beside each one.

Keep in mind silliness plays longer. Straight magic can go faster.

That will help in choosing. Then carry a few extras in case it goes faster.

As I said in a recent post, each group you perform for has a group personality, group dynamic, etc, so to some extent, as I am performing I decide what stuff I am going to do and how I'm going to present it. Some older kids act younger and respond better to some of the stuff I do for younger kids - a sillier approach, some respond better to the cool David Blaine style or whatever, and usually some of both is good, but for 9 year olds I'd say 50-80% cool stuff, and little if any look don't see, depending on the specific trick. Sometimes doing 1 look don't see thing works well for older kids if it's not baby-ish, especially if you've already done plenty of "cool" stuff. I wouldn't do fire stuff though. You can also teach them a trick or 2.

I say, something fast and flashy if you have it. For example, appearing cane, or tt & silk vanish. Or any shorter routine with a good magical ending. I think they need to see its magic from the beginning. Also, something that doesn't require a helper or else they may expect to help with everything.

Would you believe I start every kid show with the coloring book? It works for all ages because I TELL them it is a silly trick that lets me know who can follow directions and who can be loud when it's time to be loud and quiet when it's time to be quiet.

After the pictures appear I have them pick a color off their clothes and toss it toward the book. The colors miss and hit me in the face instead. That's when I pull rainbow streamers from my mouth. There is lots more byplay but the point is you can do a silly trick for any age if you set it up correctly. It's personality and audience participation that kids react to best.

This morning I had 2 shows back to back. 3-5 yrs. Then 7-9 yrs. I did the SAME show for each group. I was not sure if the older ones would like Run wolf Run and Rabbit Rampage, but they shouted just as much as the little ones. Both shows went great.

I agree you can do the same show for those age groups. When I am setting up my show I look for the older kids who think they are too grown up for a magic show. If I see one or a group I go up to them and tell them some of my tricks are pretty silly but I want to show them them a trick I do for adults. I then give them my best card trick and they usually scream OMG etc. This puts them on my side for the rest of the show.

I did a Senior Center the other day with virtually the same show I do for kids ... My scripting was a little more directed for adults but not by much.

Miser's Dream

Newspaper Tear

Daryl's Amazing Acrobatic Knot.

All winners for this age depending on how well you do them. I don't know the Baxt versions but the Daryl trick is great!

I do linking rings for this age and it is great but be prepared for some loud comments. They will say they've seen it before. I say, well you're going to see it again. They will say there is a gap in rings.

Once I heard two boys talking. "I know how this works..." time passes "Well, how does it work?" "These are different." I'm smiling inside.

Just do a good job, in good fun and you'll win them over.

Don't talk down to them.

You'll be great.

I would nix the newspaper tear. Most 9 y/os will not know what one is.

Stay away from most silly magic - that is for younger kids.

Didn't realize how old this original thread was LOL.

But, Kids have seen periodicals or pamphlets. And the concept of torn and restored is clear. There are other versions like T&R poster, various B. Day cards made into a large poster and such.

A nine-year-old would understand and enjoy a Copperfield show.
You can’t underestimate kids today; they understand much more than most think.

Yes, Although I mentioned the various Birthday cards to Poster trick, I wouldn't do it myself.

From 8 up Kids live in fear of being embarrassed by being treated like "babies".

Most people in general would rather be in pain than embarrassed and people 9 to 20 more so.
