I've always been interested in coin magic. Thought I'd come here and ask about Jay Sankey's DVD, instead of your newbie forum. Here's a link.
I'm just looking to do coin tricks when I'm at a bar with friends to entertain, more of just a hobby and fun. Is this a good video of how to do coin tricks for beginners, or should I look into something else to start off with? Help and advice is much appreciated. |

Sankey's RCM is good. So are the videos/DVDs of David Roth and not to forget Michael Rubenstein's Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights 1-3.

Could anyone please tell me the name of Jay Sankey's Coins Through Table routine on his Revolutionary Coin Magic DVD.
Thanks in advance for the info, I appreciate it. Ronnie Lemieux Montreal Canada

Yes... I second Larry's suggestion:
You should buy Bobo's book and study it for the rest of your life. It's the coin worker's bible. My personal opinion is you're better off with Michael Ammar's Easy to Master Money Miracles or David Roth's Expert's Coin Magic Made Easy. Both are excellent series of DVDs that teach fundamentals and classic routines. They are also wonderful teachers. I have many of Sankey's videos, love his creativity but I don't think you can beat the classics I've mentioned above.
Mediocrity is greatly under rated!

I would avoid Sankey's stuff like the plague...but that is just me.
Bobo's is the best you can start out with.

Yes, buy Modern Coin Magic by Bobo.
Now for the DVD. I would look to buy from any non-English speaking coin worker. The reason? Everyone who does coins does almost the same things...look how they all say get this DVD by Roth, etc. Try and find some DVD that gives you "new"/"old" lines to work down. Don't misunderstand; Roth is great, however, try and find some DVD on coins that people are overlooking...not easy. Can anyone give ideas? I like 'Three Pieces of Silver' by R.K.
sincerely, secret

It goes without saying that The New Modern Coin Magic is the best start. But I assumed phili already had it.

I'd still buy a DVD as well - if you've not seen any pro coin magicians you won't have much of an idea of what the moves look like, or more importantly, how convincing they can and should be.
The Ammar DVD would be an excellent place to start and a good companion to Bobo. Bobo on it's own is pretty dry and quite daunting for the beginner. |

Ammar and Roth should be a good start. Also check out David Stone. The basics and mechanics that are offered on these tapes is invaluable. I have seen friends new to coin magic jump right on the sankey stuff and end up frustrated. All because they wanted to run before they could even learn to crawl. I really don't know your level in coin magic, so if you are already doing advanced work, don't mind this.
All the best! Rannie

Avoid Sankey's RCM DVD. You will need to be an intermidiate coin worker to get the maximum use out of the routines he teaches on this DVD. It is a fantastic DVD but not for a beginner.
Buy Bobo's Modern Coin Magic along with something like Introduction to Coin Magic by Michael Ammar. This will make a lot of what you read in Bobo's clearer and easier to understand. This will also help to break bad habits or the incorrect handling of a sleight because with the video you now have a clear frame of reference. Michael Rubistein's Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights Vol 1-3 are superb as is Expert Coin Magic Made Easy by David Roth Vol 1-3 (all 3 volumes on one DVD) and both are excellent sources of reference material. Roth's includes routines, Michael's is solely focused on sleights and their variations. |

If your starting coin masgic then I'd reccomend the Expert coin magic by David Roth (vol 1-3),I've RCM including other coin magic dvds! from all my collection I'd pick the Roth DVDs because he is far better than all the others in COIN MAGIC!

Just to shake things up, take a look at some of Dean Dill's stuff... though more for seated performances with a table

For those of you who have revolutionary coin magic (I don't), Would I learn a lot of the same stuff from Bobo's modern coin magic? I have the book. I already know Mr. Clean Coin's Across (I've got on the spot- same method as 3/4 across) but some of the stuff on the demo video at penguin magic looks really cool. I know demos can be misleading though. Some of it just looks a lot more visual than stuff I've learned in modern coin magic? Would I learn a lot more?
