When doing a strait jacket escape should you have a plant in the audience put the jacket on you? On the Lesley video it mentioned the possibility of someone running the arm straps through the back straps if you had just anyone come up to put the jacket on you. I don't want to have to arrange for a plant in my audience each time. Are there any other ways to safe guard against this.
Ralph

Make sure they put the jacket on tight and expand your chest so there is no room to do that.
Might require you play with several jackets until you find the right one |

Hi Ralph, I close my larger chilren's shows with the SJ escape. The kids love it, the parents love it, and I really enjoy doing it. I'm not as experienced as many on this board but I have been performing it for over seven years. I have never used a plant and have never had the problem of someone running the arm strap under a chest strap. Maybe because there's so much comedy interplay with my volunteers, by the time the armstraps are applied they are pretty much tired of doing all the straps and many times just do a fast job on the arm strap. I also try to pick volunteers who are not "wise guys" and this also might be why my luck is holding out. But I think that Mark gave you excellent advice about expanding your chest to tighten the jacket. This would make it very difficult for them to slip the armstrap under the chest strap, at least on my Posey Jacket it would. Thanks Mark, I learn something new from almost every one of your posts.
Best regards, Tony Parisi |

Hi Ralph
This type of thing hardly even happens, the vast majority of volunteers want to help, not hinder. Often they have to be coaxed to actually put the jacket on tight at all! That said, it probably will happen at some point, however there are a few ways of dealing with it. If you have an assistant, they can do the actually 'lacing' of the straps, and the volunteer just does the actually tightening. If you don't have an assistant, lots of moving around, in order to 'let everyone in the audience have a chance to see what is going on', is usually enough to confuse the volunteer enough that they don't get a chance to stuff you up. If all else falls you can complain that they have 'trapped some skin', and get them to undo the strap and relace it. This will give you a chance to get them to redo the strap to your liking! These are just a couple of suggestions, general audience & volunteer control should stop this happening anyway. All the above said, there may be that one day when nothing will stop something like this happening. So learn to escape from the jacket with the arm strap laced through the back strap. In fact, get a trusted friend or partner to come up with ways of stuffing you up completely, and learn to get out anyway. Failing in front of loved ones is fine, and you learn a lot from the experience. Hope this helps David

Just an update on my suspended straight jacket escape. It all went well. The weather was great except the wind destroyed one of my restraint displays. At least it wasn't me. I'll have a video link available soon plus I'm putting the whole planning, etc. experience on DVD for those who might benefit from it. Thanks to all for your encouragement and support. I especially want to thank Steve Santini who continues to be a great support, resource and friend.

Well, the big advice is to wear that cup protector in case of folks getting nasty with that crotch strap...
From the show: "The supereme court of the united states has BANNED the strait-jacket as a cruel and unusual punishment. Do you see that strap between my legs? THAT is the cruel and unusual part!" |

I'd just like to say a big WELL DONE to Clyde on his USDSJ escape. I know it's been a long time planning, but looks as though that planning has paid off.
Also nice to 'see' Cindi and David lurking around again. Roslyn

Hey Pastor Clyde, great to see you on here again. You too David. You have both been sorely missed on this board. Pastor Clyde, I am so happy the escape went well and I can't wait to get my copy of the DVD. Congratulations! David that was some great advice on the jacket escape. I will be incorporating those methods into my training as well. And Kevin, I hope you and Kristen are doing well and had a good holiday. I'm so jealous that you got to meet Pastor Clyde and I hope I get to see you two when your tour heads to points east. Lastly to Cindi, do not be too intimidated by the "evil" forces that lurk here. There are still plenty of really nice people left on this board.

I have also been doing the straight jacket escape for many years. I have never had a volunteer put the arm strap through the back strap. I'm hoping I never will!
Mark I love the 'cruel and unusual' line. Do you mind if I use it? |

Thanks guys,
I was worried about that. I'm thinking I'm going to try and perform my strait jacket escape for the first time in public at one of my shows soon. Wish me luck. Ralph

I wouldn't have posted it here if I didn't want people to use it!
People get too bent about the who did what first thing. I wrote tons of stuff in Genii that is now out there as other people's idea, so what? I put it out there to be used. I know who did what first. I most likely will do the entire stage jacket routine in Bluffton, perhaps I will get it video'd. |

I haven't had this happen, but I do know someone who did. In the resulting struggle he got free, but he chipped a bone in his shoulder and tore two ligaments.
I make it a point to hold my arms OUT just far enough from my body for the spectators to run the end of the strap through the buckle, but do not bring my arms close enough to the body to allow this ploy without my spotting it. Still, when the arms are cinched up, if the spectator spends too much time buckling the strap, and you hear odd comments or snickers, he may be tying the excess arm strap to straps in the back (as happened to the person I know). The best bet is to have a spotter; trained assistant or even an emcee, DJ or whatever at the show who has been asked to watch for this, or for any other dangerous action. Steve

By the way, the old arm strap through the back strap ploy is useful if anyone from the audience offers to be put in the jacket. If you stand behind them as they face the audience, keep talking, and work fast, no one will never know you did it. It works great. They can blink, but not much else.
It's also fun to add chains. Click here for pictures. Yours, Paul |

Thanks for the nice thoughts and kind words regarding my escape. I have to say, that the most creative sj escape I have ever seen was performed by Kevin of Living Illusions. His presentation was comedic, creative, included productions and had the place jumping! Tears were rolling down my face in laughter and appreciation for his act. It would take an aweful lot to top his production. If you haven't caught it, get out to see these two.

I have been performing the straight jacket for over 24 years with a posey jacket. I have never had that problem. Remember to exspand you chest and square off your sholders to gain as much room in the jacket as possible. when you relax it will give you loads of room. As stated before most people truly want to help you. Make sure your instructions are clear so there is no mistake. Also is you have them pull the body straps as tight as they can they won't be able to slip the arm straps under body straps. I you want you can download my quicktime video off my website with clips from my routine. I would be happy to email the full version if you want.

I'm not particually keen on KILLING anyone, but I just saw Chris Angel's Supernatural and thought, wouldn't it be intresting to see someone escape from the 'jacket' while its on FIRE!!! Imagine the impact it will cause, especially if the fire is started by the audience!!! I AM CLAIMING NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE STATEMENTS I'VE MADE
