So here's your answer: No. You shouldn't use anonymous accounts to support your own products in an opinion-based review, or review-like situation. I still think using an anonymous account to provide factual information about a product is okay (Does it come assembled?, Is shipping included?, etc.).
Jason [/quote] That seems like a fair assessment but you've swerved the main issue here. Are you willing to speak out on how you feel about a highly trusted and respected member of the magical community using an anonymous account as a smokescreen to criticize others whilst bizarrely referring to themselves in the third person? |

Thanks to Jason for his clear and honest assessment of the situation. He didn't have to get involved in the first place (and probably wishes he hadn't). It just renders Weber's failure to apologise even more disappointing.
On the trick itself: I've heard the US version has priced the products very unbelievably. Can anyone who has the UK version say whether it's any better? |

The keeping of receipts in my wallet are the reason I went to a minimalist, front pocket style wallet. Now, my jacket pocket is overflowing with them

Reminds me of the Tommy Wonder line 'Only idiots or magicans' carry a bunch of receipts on them...and made from tyvek!
A few receipts from shops in your area could make sense. But of course the idea is just to shift as many units as possible until the next derivative idea is put out. [I know Tommy used the line with people who count 3 or 4 cards out loud]

There are plenty of ways to justify keeping a bunch of receipts in your wallet (if you're prepared to use a little imagination). For example, Americans might be better off buying the UK version of EDCeipt. You can then tell your audience that you recently visited the UK and kept the receipts as keepsakes of your holiday. The receipts remind you of where you went, what you did and what you ate. This has one big advantage: your audience will not be familiar with the shops the receipts come from, so they won't notice any inconsistencies. This is the presentation I developed for the "Age Receipt" trick I got as a member of Real Secrets because all the shops mentioned on the receipts were American, and the prices were in dollars.
Or just explain that you have an odd hobby: collecting abandoned receipts at shops. I often find discarded receipts at the supermarket, and, being a nosy person, I usually look at what the person bought. You could even mention that friends and family send receipts from other cities and countries to you so that you can add them to your growing collection. Then, when you introduce the props, say, "Here are a few of my favourite receipts". Sure, people will think you're weird, but aren't all magicians a little strange already? The behaviour connected to this thread is proof of that!
Finally, the cost of living crisis is causing more people to budget their spending carefully. So it makes logical sense that you don't throw your receipts away so that you can keep track of your spending. There are a few popular apps that require you to scan your receipts to accurately track your spending and manage your money on your smartphone. The five receipts in your wallet are the ones that you haven't scanned yet (or maybe they refuse to scan). Some services even give you rewards for scanning receipts, such as Receipt Hog. Another good excuse to be holding on to old receipts. I also enjoy origami. You can fold the receipts into a collection of small origami models and keep them somewhere in your home. Then, unfold them, and perform the trick. While researching this idea, I came across a great concept for an origami receipt by designer Paul Whittaker. If you go to the effort of making your own receipts, you could make them up using Paul's design and tell people you get them from a local craft shop that sells origami paper. Marty |

I let my life fall apart and everything I own spiral into a sea of trash so having a bunch of old receipts fits my character. Do y’all have your lives put together? Sorry to hear.

Marty - great suggestions, thanks for sharing. A good reminder that you don't have to go with whatever backstory is presented on a download.
This thread is making me feel very self-conscious about my everyday receipt carrying. It's not that abnormal! |

As usual we have people arguing about if it’s normal to carry receipts about & what looks bath& what doesn’t.
It’s always the same on here & after many many years of being paid to turn up at events & talk rubbish & do daft tricks I find it really laughable. There are the thinkers & armchair magicians who don’t actually perform on a regular basis if at all . Then there are the people who think they are creating a ‘religious experience’ Just go out and DO IT !!! You are nothing more than an Entertainer or you should be . Get a grip people , it’s not Rocket Science. Go out & perform & add FUN to what you do |

You're a receiptologist! In truth, I don't think there is a name for a person who collects old shopping receipts, but "receiptologist" makes sense. "Lotologists" collect used and unused lottery tickets (a good lead-in to "Powerball 60" by Richard Sanders and Bill Abbott). Quote:
Just go out and DO IT !!! To a certain extent, I agree with Mike. Receipts are everyday objects, so it is totally fine to treat them as such. However, consider these opening lines: "Did you know you can make money from your old shopping receipts?" "Did you know that I'm a world-renowned receiptologogist? "Look what I found stuffed down the back of my sofa?" (Remove receipts from pocket, along with some other odd objects for comedy value.) "Look at the weird marks on these receipts. Doesn't it look like a face?" (Add some strange marks, a ghostly face or black fingerprints to the receipts. Read this spooky news story for inspiration.) I think something like this is a much more memorable way to introduce the receipts. I've also thought of a way to admit that the receipts are fake but still keep them above suspicion. I'm not going to share this idea here because the explanation would be too lengthy. It will appear on my blog once I've had time to write it up. Marty |
