I don't expect anybody to believe I have magic powers, but I want it to look as real as possible and that means my props can't look like props. And that also means I must have a reason to have these receipts with me. Why? Because my friends know I'm not a guy who has his pockets stuffed with old crap like crumpled up receipts. Now, the look of the receipts and what's on there is not an issue for me personally since I actually own a receipt printer. But I do need to find a justification for having them. That's a problem a paid performer just doesn't have. |

Just add some humor. Turn the scenario so that it is fun as opposed to be concerned about what others think. Some will know that some tricks use gimmicked cards. They are still fooled.

So, I went back and tried to review what I wrote about carrying receipts, but for some unknown reason, the post has been removed. Someone has magic powers and made my post disappear!
With that said, it's all about set up. Sure, if your intro is, "Hey, you want to see this cool magic trick I just bought?", you can pretty much bring out anything. Even with this trick, if you introduce it by saying, "I just learned a trick with shopping receipts. I don't keep my own, so I downloaded and printed these crappy British ones. Don't mind the typos, Brits don't speak American.", you'll be fine. However, if you want the set up to be more, "I don't understand how this happens", you have to have a normal reason to have these receipts. If you don't carry the George Costanza signature series wallet, it's not going to be congruent with your personality. That's all. Not saying it's a bad trick. Quite the opposite, I like it and the idea it's based on a lot. |

Since, according to Nathan, one is not cool unless we post on this thread, here's my contribution... (Yes, I know Nathan was joking..)
With tax season upon us, one could argue that they just came from their accountant who was helping them with their taxes.. They had the receipts with them because they wanted to know if making a series of purchases for a home-based business was tax deductible. I am interested in learning more about the Binary Principle and the process of setting up the lists (since another effect I have works the same way -- and is credited in the credits video) ...Anyone have a resource they could direct me to? mG |

But I don't see a point in having props diguised as ordinary objects if they don't look ordinary. I don't want this all to come across as if I don't like this trick, by the way. As I said before I do like it. Actually a lot. However... I just think it is a little close minded to dismiss all the concerns people have as "you worry too much. I've been a paid pro for 250 years and people never call me out". The situation people perform in makes a huge difference when it comes to these concerns. |

As we all know, friends and family are much more likely to call you out than a stranger is. One thing creators need to realise is that just because your spectator didn’t call you out, doesn’t mean they didn’t notice. This is especially true at gigs or shows.
Bottom line is that some people will suspect the receipts are fake because of the Tyvek and spelling errors. There’s already been people on here who confirmed this. The only question is whether you care about that, or want to put in the effort to make your own and print on thermal paper. If you don’t care about having realistic props, then this trick is great for you. If you do care, then you’ll just have to print out your own receipts. |

I posit the question of why even bother when you can already perform strong effects that use the Binary Code and do not require you to add any new props?

Because it is fun to add various elements, subjects, topics, etc. I posted some ideas in the thread using receipts that I plan to use.
We all know, in the magic community there is never- Why do it that way when you can do it this way. We all have ideas, personality, creativitiy, etc. to express. That is what makes magic an art form.

There is an article in one of the magazines on there that explains the binary principle effectively with the use of age card. Essentially you can guess the age of the individual by what card they give you or have remaining in their hands by adding a number together. Essentially it is based upon the base 2 number system. It is quite simple once you learn the binary system. May need to incorporate a mnemonic word list system with it as well. To a base10 number converted to a base2 number. |

I'd rather spend $30 on a book.

Anyone actually have a review of the 7 hours of video? Is it really 7 hours of quality teaching and ideas? I'm interested in quality not quantity. There's a difference between teaching and sitting down and having a brainstorming/sessioning/interviewing/podcast style of video.
