Markthemagician and Intrepid, thanks for the kind words. I'm still keen on presenting the props as real receipts. However, if you use the last idea in the blog post and want to print your own receipts, there's no need to make them look 100% realistic. You can even use joke company names, as people often do when creating props for murder mystery evenings.

Paul mentioned that the props were printed on premium thermal paper, not regular paper (although some receipts from small, independent shops are printed on this type of paper).

I've just written a short blog post on these two effects and some of the challenges associated with performing with special receipts:

Receiptful Practices

It expands on some of the presentational ideas mentioned in this thread.

I'm not through your whole blogpost, yet, but it just came to my mind that there is something else, that could be added to your list of potential issues (although nobody here mentioned it before): The items themselves. This is definitely not a big issue but since you are writing from an amateur's perspective it could be added for completeness' sake. What I mean is: I, for example, don't drink alcohol. My friends might wonder why I'm buying all that Budweiser. Maybe somebody else is a vegetarian, so what does he do with all the sliced ham? As I said: Definitely not a pro's problem and I don't think it's a big deal, but it is something to consider...

Great blog post! Thank You for sharing that.
An interesting point about the prices not matching in regards to future price increases. The Walmart in my area, the system often rings up an incorrect price.

The issue I have with having excuse for the receipt discrepancies is that someone might not believe the excuse. If I was to be serious in tone with the excuse and doubt remains with the audience, that is worse than any potential lessening of the effect of the audience knowing that the receipts are not real. The "miracle" of the routine along with the performance is what matters.
I am considering cutting off the store name and details as I have no desire to bring them forth as real receipts. I like the joke company name idea and even editing the items to be humorous. I.E., EXPIRED MILK, FUR SINK, BATTERIES (NOT INCLUDED), BROKEN MIRROR (I bought it pre-broken so that I can't break it and have bad luck.) AUTOMOTIVE BLINKER FLUID, etc.
PAYMENT METHOD - FART JAR, COMMUNITY SERVICE, WASH WINDOWS, AISLE CLEAN UP, SISTERS BEANIE BABY COLLECTION, JUNK DRAWER MAGIC, FLIPPER COIN (OH NO!)

Marty, thank you for sharing your blog post. Definitely some ideas there I'll be pursuing myself.

I can't find the other post and who I was going to thank but whoever shared the idea in this topic about using receipts as cribs has also sparked several ideas for me, so thank you.

Re EDCeipt Are the spelling mistakes version dependent? I.e. only on the US or UK version or is it over both?
Is it a language spelling difference i.e. colour/color or a genuine error?

I know there were some spelling errors for Gossip when it was released and Alakazam were quick to remedy the issue. If the errors are genuine I'd hope Murphy's would be reprinting and making replacements available free of charge to buyers.

You're absolutely right. The actual items might arouse suspicion for particular people, such as vegetarians and vegans. You could say you're shopping for an elderly relative or neighbour. They refuse to use online shopping because they don't trust technology, or maybe their eyesight is too poor. The benefit of this approach is that it makes you sound like a good person (so maybe you really should do the shopping for your neighbour!).

In this situation, however, I think your best option, in the long run, is to print some custom receipts, especially if you want the items to reflect who you are. There's a lot of comedy to be had reading through the list. I'd be tempted to put something mildly embarrassing on there, such as TR TROJAN ULTRA THIN, then you can say, "It was a toy horse!" or "It was a pizza with a thin base, honest!". The psychology here is sound. If you did create the receipts yourself, why would you put something embarrassing on this list? However, it is completely plausible that you might accidentally have something embarrassing on a real receipt in your wallet.

I'm glad you found it useful. Another way to frame the receipts as fake and get away with it is to say you made them for a child. For example, I'd explain that my two eldest daughters love playing "shops" together (when they're not fighting, of course). When introducing the receipts, I'd say, "I gave some old shopping receipts to my eldest daughter, but she said, 'These are no good, Daddy. We don't sell any of those things in our shop.' So I ended up spending the whole weekend printing some custom receipts for her!'" As a father of three girls, this kind of stuff happens to me all the time.

Hey everyone. Sorry I have not been around for a few days I have been at The Blackpool Magic Convention and it’s been very busy. Anyone that came up and say ‘hi’ thank you very much!

Anyway I am trying to catch up on some of the comments here on the thread. There are a few things I need to say. So firstly I only want to put our products that add value to the magic community. I really believe that EDCeipt really adds. The tutorial is fantastic and some of the ideas on there really clear up some areas of using the binary system. I think there is so much material on the tutorial it’s easy to miss.

One of my favourite ideas on there is to have someone think of a item on any receipt and then saying to someone else that they also need to think of an item but you want it to be totally different. So the first spectator goes through and takes out all the results with their item on so that the second spectator can think of something totally different. This is such a great justification for the sorting procedure.

It’s gems like this that allow you to go in whatever direction you want to. Anyone that saw me demo this at Blackpool (where it sold out by the way) knows I was using the note screen concept instead of using a crib. I had several magicians think I was using an app.

Regarding the receipts the editable PDFs have now been added to everyone’s accounts and this should make it easy to make your own without any problems. I have had no problem justifying the receipts. I just keep them in my wallet and take them out. Regarding pricing issues I don’t live in the US. The UK receipts were based off my prototype which were based on real prices. To be honest nobody is looking at the prices as this is not where the attention is being drawn but if anyone feels uncomfortable with that it is an easy matter to make more using the editable PDFs.

Finally thanks to everyone that has commented on this thread with items and concepts and suggestions. I just read the blog my Marty which was great and I cannot wait for Sudo to explore this concept. I really owe him a debt of thanks I can never repay.

Once again thanks again to everyone and I’ll try to me more active on the Café now Blackpool is done

That’s a really great idea.

As for the receipts, come on guys, I don’t think there’s anything you could say or do that would make people believe any prop you are using isn’t gimmicked/fake in some way. You’re a magician, that’s normal. Anyways, you have the editable PDFs now, so make them look however you want and print them on whatever you like.

Hi Craig,

Murphys updated the downloads a few days ago with editable receipt templates, but they are only for US receipts. Is it possible to get them to upload UK receipt templates, too?

Thanks.

They did a real nice job on the PDF to alter and instructions.

In order to edit the receipts you will need adobe pro. You can TRY a look alike. But for adobe pro you can purchase an annual subscription for 19$ and cancel it with 14 days for a full refund.

So you will have 14 days to edit your receipts.

Thinking about this "painting" idea further, I could see Derren Brown doing something like this in his theater shows - but with perhaps a few further additions.

Picture this:

On the stage are 4 (or 5 - doesn't really matter) easels. Resting upon each, and facing the audience, are various beautiful paintings. (This is perfect for Derren as he is a talented painter and the paintings could be ones that he actually painted himself!)

A volunteer comes on stage and is asked to view the artworks. When they are finished, he turns the easels around so that the paintings no longer face the audience and the participant is directed to go behind the paintings and switch the paintings around on the easels while Derren faces the audience and keeps them entertained with his charismatic banter so that he won't have any idea where each painting resides once they've been moved around. The volunteer has also been instructed to focus on an item that stands out to her in one of the paintings while she moves them around. When finished, Derren turns to address her. At this point, all he sees is the backs of the paintings and the participant. The participant is asked to move to the first painting in the row and to move to each painting one at a time, pausing to study each one as she does. As she does this, she is instructed to close her eyes and visualize the item she is thinking of if she sees it in the painting she is currently looking at. Naturally, that is his "cue". And of course, the frames are discreetly marked on the backs. If they're canvas paintings stretched on plain frames, it is only natural that there might be a few paint spots on the back in the corners, etc. Smile

I installed the supplied fonts in the download and just tested out editing the templates in LibreOffice. Apart from some garbage characters appearing when I open them up, it looks like editing them with the various Merchant fonts is supported.

So if you don't have access to Adobe Pro, LibreOffice could be a good free option.

This was on my Macbook M1, but I'd guess will also work on the Windows version.

That's very nice of you to say, Craig. Thank-you. I was only doing what I felt in my heart to be right; you don't owe me anything.

(But if you want to send me a copy of EDCeipt, I certainly wouldn't say no.) Smile

I've never been to Blackpool, but it sure looks like a lot of fun. I watched a few youtube videos of this years turnout, and despite being in Canada, was surprised at how many people I recognized walking around on the floor. If I ever make it over there, perhaps we can go for a pint.

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. I think the idea has real merit and I'm still exploring other possibilities.

So, just received this. I like it. The receipts are all places I shop here in the US. I'm completely unable to tell yet what a specs take on the Tyvex will be, but I'm not concerned about it in the least. They feel fine enough imo. As for the lengths being all the same, another non issue. I already folded them up at varied lengths, and crinkled them up a bit. I'll post more when I actually use it. The instruction videos are hefty, and I'm still working through those. All in all, it's as described, and I'm pleased with the purchase.

Good to hear, 252Buddy. Smile

I actually looked at a few real receipts I had around home and noticed a spelling mistake or two among them. So I suppose that is actually nothing to really fret about after all. I think it's a common trait amongst those in the mystery arts to be overly nitpicky sometimes - myself included.

I have hit GOLD. I have the absolute PERFECT idea for this methodology now - and incorporates different paintings instead of lists of words! This idea is pure Mentalism and is best suited for hardcore Mentalists. It also has the ability to do much more than simply reveal a thought-of item. It's the theme behind this that makes it so astoundingly good.

I really wish I could say more at this point; I'm just so brimming with excitement that I can barely contain it! The wheels are already in motion and you'll be hearing more about it later at some point. It's definitely going to be a commercial release and I'm working on this project in conjunction with someone most of you all know and whose identity will remain secret for now. Smile

That's all I can say at the moment, but man oh man...is this ever the most perfect idea. You are not gonna believe how perfect this truly is until you see it for yourself. Not trying to hype; just ecstatic with excitement is all. Those who have put their faith in me to come up with something spectacular and take this concept in a revolutionary new direction are not going to be disappointed.
