Speaking as a hobbyist; this thread really demonstrates the ugly side of magic...

I did purchase this nonetheless and it arrived early today. I like it. I'm yet to watch the tutorial, but the feel and look of the receipts are great, and I've already wife tested it. I also have Transaction and I'm not too sure which I'll use, but leaning towards this. I like keeping them in my wallet as an EDC, so I think tyvek was the right decision.

Looking forward to Blackpool!

There’s something fishy going on here.

It appears as though there’s been no real off-topic inflammatory name calling prior to the last couple of pages. It’s all been mild, to me it suddenly feels that it’s come on in abundance. I don’t have any evidence when I say this, but it’s certainly coincidental- what better way to get a thread pulled? Maybe Michael and his band of merry-men have realised that the only way to get rid of the evidence is by being offensive?

It would certainly benefit their cause.

If it is, it would be a very clever move as they know obscenity diverts peoples attention from them and has everyone divided - it also breaches the Cafés rules and the thread disappears it’s win/ win for them.

If you don’t believe that they have been on calls behind the scenes trying to figure out ways to control the narrative and bury this, then I can tell you you’re mistaken.

Think carefully about what I’m saying here - there is a pattern of behaviour present. A group of unknowns, behind the scenes have trolled, tormented, promoted and steered threads as a collective for 20 years and openly admitted it. A collective of people that design deception. In any other circumstance I’d say that it’s unlikely a ruse but the reality is (in this situation) if you fall for these tactics then you have fallen into the exact trap these unknowns want.

You become the sucker.

I believe it’s a case of divide and conquer - the question is are you going to take it lying down?

David.

It was nice to read a post about the actual product rather than add to the bickering well done.

Would be great to hear your thoughts as a comparison between the both and the pros and cons what you independently feel.

A Real Secret

You guys are right. Michael Weber is Newguy. But, so was I. And so were a handful of other magicians whose names many of you would likely recognize (some no longer with us.) The original idea was to allow a few of us to participate in this community anonymously, primarily so the MagicCafe wouldn’t show up in web searches of our names by clients or muggles. We soon realized it had the nice side effect of allowing us to share ideas, information and opinions absent the air of authority (or lack of in my case) that sometimes happens when a recognizable name posts here. We thought that if we appeared to be a “new guy” in magic, we might side step a lot of the petty arguments and flame throwing that happen in all public magic forums, and that people would consider the ideas and opinions without being tainted by the reputation of the source—like Stephen King writing as Richard Bachman. I never knew which posts came from who, but I can tell you that I never posted as Newguy after the first time Michael Weber was unmasked here as “Newguy” way back in 2008. In fact, I rarely look at the Café except to research specific topics, and I had all but forgotten about Newguy until a friend pointed me to this thread. I hope you’ll believe me when I tell you there was no nefarious plan to deceive or con anyone, and no malice intended. Surely it's no surprise that many magicians have shadow accounts here and a desire for anonymity, so we didn't think it was any big deal. Perhaps we were naive.

We are telling you this because the Newguy account is useless now, and we don’t like seeing our friend getting beaten up by a half wise mob. My understanding is that the responses to Mr. Petty here were not made by Michael personally, but with his blessing and on his behalf, and only after Mr. Petty refused to communicate with Michael and Tim Trono about their trick Age Receipts--choosing instead to have Murphy’s Magic act as intermediary, and taking the situation public on YouTube rather than have what should have been a civil and private conversation. I have more to say about that situation, but Michael has politely requested that I stand down.

Newguy is dead. Long live "Newguy."

Your friend in magic,
Eric Mead

PS--Yes, I know what you really care about: It is our sincere belief and intention that the Conover books will go to print before the end of this year.

I am struggling with this.

If I understand this, a bunch of people share an account. They surreptitiously share the login and password among one another to post under the same name to appear as a "new guy" in magic.

Does this even make sense to anyone? Why would a bunch of people share a username and login here? Are Café user names that expensive? Are well-known magicians so uncreative they cannot come up with their own individual sock puppet names and therefore must share one? And what happens if two "newguy" users want to disagree with each other in a thread? Do they just come off as schizophrenic? Have a fistfight in the parking lot to determine which newguy's opinion will become the official one?

I'm sorry but this sounds absolutely ridiculous. If it is somehow true, it is bizarre if not downright dopey.

Back in a 2016 thread here ( https://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/view......&start=0 ) I wrote this:

He's also friends with Ricky Jay, whose contempt for hobbyist magicians is legendary. Ricky simply shuns them.

Michael Weber sells to hobbyists, but I think to a certain degree he shares Ricky's feelings and, in my view, those feelings are manifested in his commercial dealings with the hobbyists.

Of course it was newguy who responded.

Eric Mead, thank you for clarifying and always having a calm voice in these things. I read your post in your voice. But unfortunately, I now read every other Magiccafe user post in Michael Weber's voice because I can no longer trust the sanctity of an internet forum where people generate temporary emails to create accounts to bypass forum rules. I now blame Weber for the existence of this feature on the internet.

I totally get why you would use the newguy persona. The internet is filled with clout chasers and superficial thinkers. And anonymity is something people fail to cherish. To be clear, Michael's gonna have to take an L for some of this, and I'm sure you as his friend will be the first to smack him upside the head the next time you see him ("thanks for f$%@ing it all up, wEbBeR"). However, I think this whole thing played out really poorly, and could have been conducted without all this consternation.

Craig should have spoken to Michael and Tim himself. As much as everyone wants to support him and be on his side cuz they view Michael as coming off scummy, let's not forget that everything prior to this thread had been above board. Michael got in contact with Craig before the release. That's the window he's allowed to work with. Need I remind this community that it does NOT matter if a product is already manufactured and ready for release.

Remember, Chris Ramsay pulled his "card-to-pocket" product from Ellusionist because it had gotten complaints of being too similar to ENVY-LOPE by Brandon David & Chris Turchi. And in THAT scenario, the application of the underlying principle was "different", but Ramsay decided to take the product down anyway. I'll leave you with a few of his words regarding his reasoning

Nice attempt to reframe from a new guy with 8 posts, but 20 years of shill reviews does not really qualify as "above board."

I wasn’t going to get involved with this thread again but just wanted to add that this concept of group sharing a screen persona immediately came off as very strange to me also, and almost unbelievable. It doesn’t make sense for all the reasons you mentioned. What’s the advantage? Wouldn’t it be better for each person in the group to have separate identities so they could make it appear as if several members are voicing their opinion. Not to mention it would also be far less likely to raise red flags as is what happened in this case. And on top of all that it would just be flat out easier and less complicated.

And MM seems to be trying awfully hard to get this thread removed with his way over the top name calling and pot stirring.

And newguy himself tries in vain to shift focus.

At least Ricky Jay's contempt for hobbyists appeared to be pure.

Michael Weber seems more conflicted. His 20 years of duplicity certainly demonstrate that contempt, but those same 20 years of deceptive sock puppet activity also demonstrate that he seems to crave admiration and approval from those hobbyists.

Agreed. It makes no sense for them to all share a login when they could’ve just had their own accounts. Definitely something weird going on there.

And mine just shipped. I guess we can change this from "will it happen" to "it's happening". Looking forward to it.

I wonder if this will turn into a 'George Lucas trying to buy existing copies of the 'Star Wars Holiday Special' just so he can destroy them' fiasco?

My EDCeipts turned up this morning first impressions Tyvek wrong way to go its totally the wrong texture compared to thermal paper and how on earth nobody wont clock this is beyond me - Please Please Please Murphy's offer a thermal paper set and let people use the tyvek ones as practice receipts, Also the tutorial misses telling you how to use the hidden thing to get to the product nowhere loads of waffle but no direct a,b,c instructions this needs addressing for those who do not understand the system at play.

Hi guys!

Just chiming in to say I was part of the charade. Not posting this because I'm about to get outed. Promise. And obvs no apologies.

I don't want to make any excuses though. But...I wasn't the only one posting as newguy. And I only did it from the goodness of my heart. And I stopped doing it when it looked like I might get caught in 2008. And loads of other magicians cloak their ID here too. But no excuses.

I'm not a pr*ck. Promise!

Also, you guys are dimwits. I mean, yes my friend Wobbler sanctioned the messages on this thread. And yes I'm not even going to mention all the times he glowingly reviewed or defended his own products anonymously. But he's a GOOD guy, goddamit!

And it's all Craig's fault.

Anyway, just wanted to make sure you know I'M NOT A PR*CK. Promise!

Yours with sincere and heartfelt love,

Derrick Weed.

PS Let's get back to (my) business. Buy my new book. Please!!

Hey! Have you seen the full tutorial as it’s not live till Monday? We definitely go through how to get the information a few different times.

As for the feel of the receipts, have you tried it on real people. I tried so many different options when developing this and found through extensive testing nobody notices they are not real receipts. Watch the live performances and then try it on real people. Nobody ever notices

Hope that helps
