Eric, if I'd created a collective anon account so we could share ideas without people having preconceptions about the people involved and it went this way I'd be deeply ashamed.
The sense of betrayal if one member of the group simply chose to use that avenue for self promotion and deceitful trade practices would be high. I certainly wouldn't be in a rush to jump and defend them. |

Picture the scene.
5 men. Sat at 5 computers on different parts of the world. All connected by the magic of the internet. Michael Weber (newguy) Eric Mead (not newguy) Tim Trono (Mac_Stone) Chris Rawlins (Mr. Blonde) Aam Rubin (The Jerx) Adam begins. “Fellas, this is the plan. A 3 pronged attack. On my blog, I’ll write two posts, one after another. The first will make people side with newguy and manipulate people against Craig. The se…" newguy interrupts to. “Chris, you IDIOT, you’ve left your mic on and I can hear you cutting up cheap privacy film! This is why everyone hated Mr. Blonde! Sorry Adam, continue." “… second post will be making light of using sock puppet accounts. Phase 3… A friend in need is a friend in Mead, if you catch my drift?” Eric takes over. “This idea is SO bold that they’ll almost… almost not believe it. Have you ever seen the film Inside Man with Clive O…” “NO!” Shouts Tim as Weber berates Rawlins in the text box. Trono continues “It won’t work. They’re magicians, not 4 years old! Believe me. Michael, just admit you’ve done wrong and say ‘Sorry’ it worked for me, it’ll work for you.” Annoyed, with a short sip of air, Mead continues: “Clive Owen. It’s so crazy, that it’ll work. And at best, the confusion will cause people to look away and while they start the infighting, Blackpool will appear. The convention always has a drama. This year I think I could convince Rawlins to have a fight with a with David Penn. What do you say Blonde?” “I like Crayons.” Says Chris. Then it’s settled. Weber, what’s the password for new guy’s account?" “I don’t… re…” “Just say it." “Ok…it's: Weberisgod1” |

Petty & Weber should have worked this out like men over the phone and could have made a collaboration of ideas/routines which in the end would have made a better product for the magic consumers. Instead, we get the most entertaining **** show drama to hit the Café in recent memory. Any publicity is good publicity for Murphys magic though. The real winner this week was Murphys while Petty & Weber are fuming stressed out over all forms of receipts.
What Would Weber Do? Be Petty. Shocked that Eric Mead was trolling too. I only have so much time to read on the Café. Please stop wasting my time with fake accounts to vent your opinions and sell us on more magic. |

On Feb 10, 2023, sileeni wrote: Let me help clear that up. 5 years ago, I was publishing a periodical titled "Skeletons From the Closet" and sharing it free of charge here on the Café. On the last page, I gave my paypal details for anyone who felt like donating to help keep the project going. While looking through my paypal one day, I noticed a generous donation from Michael and it had his personal email attached. So I emailed him to thank him. When we talked, I asked him how he'd acquired a copy of "Skeletons" as I was sure I'd not sent him one. Michael revealed that he'd requested one from me here at the Café under the username "newguy" and then asked me to keep his identity here a secret. Which I did - for the last 5 years. From that point on, we only had exchanges through email - not at the Café. I did see some shilling for his work occurring but chose to ignore it. It was only when "newguy" began denigrating Craig here that I spoke up and broke my silence because I felt that I was complicit if I didn't. And that last line of the first post "newguy" made on this thread was particularly disturbing, too. It's one thing to make accusations and name call, but at least have the decency to do so without hiding. That just sat wrong with me. Believe me; I have lost a lot of sleep over this issue and I did not want to speak up and break silence, but I also didn't want to feel complicit either by allowing these sorts of underhanded tactics to continue. I really don't wish to comment anything more about this situation. It's just a minor effect with receipts. Nifty, sure. But nothing earth-shattering. As I (and many others) have said before, this should've been handled out of the public eye.

So Eric Mead is saying his friends - some of the most creative men in magic by all accounts - couldn't think of more than one sock puppet name between them?

This Eric Mead revelation is just sad- despite how altruistic he tried to make it sound. For 20 years they conspired to deliberately misled the community that gave them nothing but praise, and in some cases, hero worship.
The very same community who put trust and money in their pockets. In Craig's last video he spoke about the magic mafia, and naming names of those involved. This is more like the wizard of OZ revelation. Pay no attention to the men behind : N -? E -eric W - Weber G U Y |

Read and reread this post and digest it, there’s a lot here to take in, Eric , what are you trying to do and why?
Nm quote]On Feb 10, 2023, Eric Mead wrote: A Real Secret You guys are right. Michael Weber is Newguy. But, so was I. And so were a handful of other magicians whose names many of you would likely recognize (some no longer with us.) The original idea was to allow a few of us to participate in this community anonymously, primarily so the MagicCafe wouldn’t show up in web searches of our names by clients or muggles. We soon realized it had the nice side effect of allowing us to share ideas, information and opinions absent the air of authority (or lack of in my case) that sometimes happens when a recognizable name posts here. We thought that if we appeared to be a “new guy” in magic, we might side step a lot of the petty arguments and flame throwing that happen in all public magic forums, and that people would consider the ideas and opinions without being tainted by the reputation of the source—like Stephen King writing as Richard Bachman. I never knew which posts came from who, but I can tell you that I never posted as Newguy after the first time Michael Weber was unmasked here as “Newguy” way back in 2008. In fact, I rarely look at the Café except to research specific topics, and I had all but forgotten about Newguy until a friend pointed me to this thread. I hope you’ll believe me when I tell you there was no nefarious plan to deceive or con anyone, and no malice intended. Surely it's no surprise that many magicians have shadow accounts here and a desire for anonymity, so we didn't think it was any big deal. Perhaps we were naive. We are telling you this because the Newguy account is useless now, and we don’t like seeing our friend getting beaten up by a half wise mob. My understanding is that the responses to Mr. Petty here were not made by Michael personally, but with his blessing and on his behalf, and only after Mr. Petty refused to communicate with Michael and Tim Trono about their trick Age Receipts--choosing instead to have Murphy’s Magic act as intermediary, and taking the situation public on YouTube rather than have what should have been a civil and private conversation. I have more to say about that situation, but Michael has politely requested that I stand down. Newguy is dead. Long live "Newguy." Your friend in magic, Eric Mead PS--Yes, I know what you really care about: It is our sincere belief and intention that the Conover books will go to print before the end of this year. [/quote] |

I watched Craig’s video and then dug through this rabbit hole of a thread and ultimately I like what Craig is saying. I think even if a similar trick was previously “out there” it certainly wasn’t in wide enough distribution to consider it “published”. The problem is there are few if any new ideas. All magic tricks are duplication or modification from previous tricks. There are a ton of creators trying to make up new material and it is rare to come up with completely new effects. Everything is iterative and the people creating effects should understand this and give more leeway to their fellow creators. The whole Newguy fiasco shows a lot of duplicity in the nature of the post especially now that we know the truth behind it. I’ll be ordering EDCeipt as it looks like a great trick with a nice gimmick and lots of great content to digest.

The level of collusion in this Newguy marketing deceit is heartbreaking, and the conceit of those involved is unbelievable.

Adding Eric Mead (a thinker and performer I used to admire) to the list of “newguys” I will be boycotting moving forward after his most ridiculous post! You should have kept your mouth shut EM!
