So far music has gone bust because of online trading/sharing. But there are still concerts around the world, selling out and they are charging so much for tickets it's astounding.
And now magic is being affected mainly because of the high prices of most tricks and the secrecy of how they did it. We live in the internet age and that means there is gonna be more of this stuff going on. TV is now being affected as people are turing on their web based computers more than watching the tube. Sounds like we are in a changing society. Information has always been available to those that seek it and the internet has made information so much more available to the masses. Before a rumour started someplace and it went around the world in a matter of time. Now it is a matter of an instant. If you think that you can do something about it, I beg to differ. If the majority of people decide that it's ok to share information, then it shall be and no one person will be able to stop them from doing so. If there are 2 billion people in china and they all decide to share magic inbetween themselves, especially being a communist country, which does not believe in copyright, then what can our western belief world do about it? Nothing - either you join them or ignore them. I am sure eventually everytone will be tempted to find the secret to a trick if it is available online for free. Everyone. Every year there are new babies born and they will eventually see their first magic show, and they will not know what the secrect is, eventhough their parents might know how it is done. Doesn't mean that the end result is ruined. It sort of reminds me that once we believed in Santa Claus and then the secrect was discovered and eventhough we today might know the secrect today, it doesn't stop us from enjoying his spirit every year and sharing it amongs our friends and family. When was the last time you revealed that the secrect of Santa Claus to a young kid? If ever? But we all know who bought you that tie on Christmas! |

The excludes most of the magic "community". It's a shame that a lot of excellent magic is gone forever because magicians are such a disgustingly selfish lot. Del Ray couldn't even perform for magicians without fearing that his act would be ripped off and his livelyhood harmed. That's pathetic. Maybe he would have been more receptive to idea of sharing some of his methods near the end of his life, but why would he? Did the community at large deserve it? The more that this stuff is spread far and wide on the internet, the deeper underground the new and innovative stuff is driven. Is that good for magic? Maybe it is, maybe it isn't but we may well find out.

I agree that to keep it a secret to yourself is the most effective way to keep it from the masses. But then you have situation like Fearson's Sawing in Half where he sold it to David Copperfield and thus we have no idea where to purchase the effect even if you are willing to shell out the money. And if anyone was really willing to go as far as to make their own version of it thus either creating a new one or discovering the old secret, well, all the power to him. Not saying he should immediately log on to the internet and give it away for free. But it does sort of make a world of competition, doesn't it?
What about taking it to your grave? Thus the idea would be lost throughout time and no way of knowing if your discovery or ideas is the same as the guy that invented it. But at least you will be in the pages of history, assuming that the library doesn't get burned down and all information concerning your trick is lost forever time!!! |
