Speaking in another thread about Magicians and Comics dealing with each other...

I was working as a clown in a stupid Ice Show ("Nudes On Ice") at the Pepermint Tree in San Francisco. On the same show was the excellent 'Pick Pocket' performer Ricky Dunn.
On a few mornings we would go have breakfast at a TINY counter called 'M's'. Only about 7 or 8 seats around the counter and 'M' (a sweet Japanese lady) would cook breakfast.
Well...down the street (Broadway in North Beach) was Rodney Dangerfield and a comic who has since disappeared but was semi-big at the time Stanley Myron Handleman.
ON these mornings there we all were at M's.

Rodney ALWAYS was writing...little slips of paper...writing jokes...joke after joke...many of them VERY funny. He was intense about it.

BUT...one morning, the game was (thanks to the evil mind of Handleman) that you couldn't laugh at them or you would have to buy breakfast for the group!

"Hey...fellas...listen to this...
When I was kid ...you know...etc. etc. what...that's not funny? (Some times we were ready to pee our collective pants...yes it was funny! But we were all broke and didn't want to fund the other guys breakfast).

We would keep a straight face and Rodney would get mad as a wet hen and crumple up the paper and toss it on the floor. "You guys are tough...you know...that was a good joke..."

Eventually Dangerfield got tired of the responses and paid his meal and left. Of course we all croaked laughing...BUT Handleman went and gathered up the little pieces of paper and had a nice new bunch of very funny material for HIS act!

A couple of days later I get a call from Ricky Dun...I was the only one who had a car and Dangerfield had to get to the airport.
Ricky was in the passenger seat and Rodney was in the back...Ricky Dunn's 'mean streak' came out and he decided to tell Rodney about the joke bit at the Café.

Wrong move! Rodney was furious (can you blame him?)...kicked the seat and when at the airport, stormed out of the car, swearing at the world. After he was gone...we croaked again laughing...but I always felt bad about that...

I much later saw Rodney live at a Tahoe Casino and he was THE funniest comic I ever saw...so eveidently he remembered some of those jokes or didn't need them anyway.
