TCM is running a series of Ann Southern films today that, quite honestly, I've never heard of before.
The series follows Masie Revere, a Brooklyn showgirl who has amazing adventures around the world. This one starts with her working a Carnival sideshow as the "Headless Lady" illusion. Until drunken Lew Ayres spoils the gig and (shades of Seinfeld) a judge orders she be hired as a maid at Ayers estate for two months (at $25 per week!) This film features a beautiful version of the Illusion. Highly recommended. |
