How many of you out there perform Lee Ashers Three Stylin ?
Whilst I do like the idea of using colourful poker chips I'm put off that it's the same chip that travels everytime, I did think about perhaps using poker chips of the same colour to negate this as at least it would still use a bright colour. |

Simon Coronel won a Fool Us trophy on Penn and Teller with his version of the routine. There are a couple of clips of him on YouTube doing the routine with different endings which are worth watching. The fact that the same chip goes across just doesn't matter. And, I think using different colored chips looks more interesting.

Hi Nicholas thanks for your comment. I have seen the clip of Simon's excellent performance but all with his under the arm ditch however if you read the comments also on his youtube performance there are plenty of people who do notice the descepency of the same chip travelling each time.
Do you perform the effect yourself ? |

Yes, I’ve performed it and liked it very much for years, mostly in table to table restaurant work. I would think about the fact that anyone watching it on YouTube is probably a magician. My experience is that there are those commenting on YouTube who delight in letting everyone know that they notice the workings or discrepancies in a trick. If I stopped doing effects that magicians think are discrepant, I’d have to eliminate a few great tricks.

What put me off was a magician said just because people are polite doesn't mean they don't notice,he then went on to say he was sitting with none magicians and someone came over and performed 3 stylin for the group however when the magician had moved on the fact that only the red chip moved was commented on.
As someone who actually performs it you obviously have a greater understanding of how it works in the real world than myself I can only go by posts ive read here on the Café when searching. Have you altered anything in anyway as I have thought of a couple of things which might help take the heat off a little if I were to perform it ? Thanks again for your input |

I find it hard to believe that a non-magician seeing the effect for the first time will obsess on the fact that only the red chip moves. There's too much going on. There's a clip on YouTube of Lee Asher performing the effect at his lecture in Japan a number of years ago. Except for a slight tweak at the beginning of the trick, that's pretty much how I perform it. You'll notice how he moves along fairly briskly, yet the reactions are very good. The only mention of an individual chip is at the end, when he says " This is the one you have to watch ".

To be fair when you watch Simon do the routine you do get caught up in the moment and forget that only one chip is moving, unfortunately these days when performing people are very quick to get their phones out to record you which allows them to rewind etc which is where using objects that are the same does make a big difference.

I have both Flying Colors and The Ammo. I realize that for manufacturing these types of tricks in volume, there are limitations as to how the chips will look. I prefer real casino chips for effects like this. If I need a double facer, for instance, I make it myself.
In addition, while I really like Simon Coronel’s routine, due to limited attention spans these days, I find that a briskly done routine works better for walk around/table to table work. By the way, the only time anyone filmed a routine while I was performing, they asked first. |
