Interesting offering through Magic Shop San Diego. The apparent free handing of the “brainwave” deck by the spectator is of interest here.

Trailer shows nothing. Camera shot is never on the deck or hands. For all we know once he knows the card he adds it to the deck after he's found it from another index deck in his pocket... OK I'm being ridiculous, but when the trailer camera never shows the whole picture, they could be doing anything with the deck. Not convinced at all watching this, not until I see a full performance!
But then again I could be wrong, and this turns out to be an absolute miracle effect! |

After shuffling the imaginary deck in their mind, you ask the spectator to think of a card. Once the spectator locks a card in mind you then point out a deck that has been sitting on the table the entire time and never touched by the magician. You ask the spectator to open up the deck, the magician still has no knowledge of what the card is, and asking the spectator to spread through the deck and find their thought of card. The card is removed from the deck and the deck is then turned over to show clearly that all the cards in the deck are red except for one card. The spectator turns over the card that they merely thought of and it is the only card with a blue back! |

The trailer also says hands off and no sleight of hand. I’m interested but would like a full performance also.

I think this is something I have actually wondered why no one has done before (maybe it has been done, I just have not seen it) which would be having a deck of cards consisting of slim cards rough and smoothed. Like a Phil deck but using rough and smooth. This allows you to do a brainwave effect if every other card is blue and red, because you essentially have what looks like one deck of cards by its thickness, but you actually have two decks. This way you can spread and show both sides of the cards but when any card is named you can take that card out and show that it has a different colored back.

Just wanted to hop on here and give a little more details as it seems like there may be some info needed on this post. If you watch at the end of the trailer there is a full performance of the routine.
Can it be any card? No Is it a force? a force of a bank of cards yes. 8 cards to be exact. Are they thin cards? No This deck is not the same as the ultimate brainwave, killer effect, but not the same. If anyone have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask! |

Brainwave Redux - Mini Review
I hate to say anything negative. I look for the positive and I am reluctant to complain about most things. But this is a rare exception. First, the positives. The effect is strong in the right circumstances. No sleight of hand is needed. The reset is easy and it can be done openly. But not all is gravy. Yes, a spectator can handle the cards (briefly) but the cards cannot be inspected rigorously and the deck cannot be used for most card tricks (with some exceptions such as packet tricks i.e. Twisting the Aces, etc. and it could be used for an Ambitious Card routine). There is a reason the trailer does not present a normal full performance. The ad copy requires interpretation. The spectator cannot name any card they please. The choice of cards is limited and this has to be carefully managed. Without luck, the procedure will not fool a magician. Contrary to the ad copy, the magician will know, and must know, the selected card before the spectator looks at the deck. The trick can only be performed for a lay audience and even then, it requires a somewhat chaotic environment such a bar. IMO it cannot be used for paying customers, because attentive spectators will easily catch on to issues with the way the choice of the card must be orchestrated. Bottom line. You can use this in a casual setting if you are truly expert at audience management. It does not work the way the ad copy says it does. It will not fool magicians and IMO it will not fool paying customers (unless you change the procedure and start with this deck in one pocket, not in view, and a regular brainwave or invisible deck in another pocket to use when needed). The lady who named a card in the trailer happened to name a card the magician really liked. Had she named another card, the trick would in most cases have been difficult to conclude, the magician might even have brought out a different deck (according to the instructions) and the trailer would have presented a different performance entirely. They included a performance in which luck ruled the day. These discrepancies motivated me to provide this information. |

Thank you so much martonikus for the honest review. Another misleading trailer AND ad copy. In the performance he asks the guy sitting at the bar to think of ANY card from the imaginary deck, he names AS, he then says you could have picked 51 other cards... So to us magicians who are thinking of buying this, its made to appear the spectator has a choice of all the cards, all the "hanky panky" business of getting a spectator to call out one of the 8 required cards is missing from the trailer!
If I hadn't seen the honest review from martonikus I may have bought this trick because it sounded like an awesome impossible effect, sadly its not and I won't be buying. Remember this is my personal view, I'm sure it will be perfect for others. Enjoy! |

Please bare in mind I am only responding to the things that I feel need responding to; the other points (even some I don't agree with) are opinions and it doesn't matter if I agree with those are not as they are your opinions and we are all entitled to them. Only parts I want to touch on, we do not say anywhere in the ad copy that this is a "magician fooler" and never intended it to be. Not really sure the difference between a paying customer and someone you would meet at a bar, but I have fooled plenty of magicians at conventions and this does extremely well with all laymen. Still not made as a magician fooler. We also never say this deck can be examined rigorously, but spectators does touch the deck throughout the whole routine and we wanted to make sure that was seen. You do not need to know the card (there is a process, as with all magic effects) but as long as you follow the selection process you do not need to know the card till they spectator locates the card in the pack and reveals it. The deck also can either start in full view from the beginning or in your pocket, which ever you prefer. By no means do you need a second deck to perform this effect, Allen just mentions in the instructions that if you are working with a difficult spectator what you should keep in mind and how to work around that. We never said that is could be any card, but if it was any card we would have really made a point of saying that. Regardless of that, I have noticed from the few comments here that you are not the only person who thought that, so we have already updated the ad copy to state that it cannot be any card. I am sorry your interpretation of this effect wasn't what you were wanting and hope we were able to resolve the issue for you when you called. |

And if you come out with something I really like I will be more than happy to post a highly positive review of whatever that turns out to be. Showing only the lucky best case outcome in the trailer is problematical for me. If the card is chosen via "conversation", as in the instructions, the magician will certainly know the card before the spectator touches the deck. Especially since the magician needs to be sure the card is "well-chosen" so to speak. However, I agree that alternatives exist, although they are never mentioned in the instructions. For example, one could classic-force a selection from a small block, and then the choice would be suitable without the magician necessarily knowing its exact identity. But that would create a different effect than what is presented in the ad, the trailor and the instructions. So I respectfully have to maintain that contrary to the ad copy, the magician will certainly know the card before the spectator handles the deck. Another solution that comes to mind is a solid verbal force such as Joshua Jay's Inferno. But then there is no need for a special deck! In my experience, patrons who give their time and money to attend a formal close-up or small venue magic show are highly attentive and will be suspicious of too much "verbal guidance", unlike many of those who are just milling about a bar or magic store. I did not say the ad copy claimed the trick to be a magician fooler. On the other hand, the instructions do say that the magician should use a second deck - somehow - to conclude the trick for a spectator who insists on their own "favorite card", and that makes this trick more difficult in my view. I did point out, both in my review and over the phone, that the magician can "work around" this problem by starting with the redux deck in one pocket and a regular brainwave or invisible deck in another pocket, which IMO is more of a solution than what is provided in the instructions. At least with this approach the effect can safely be introduced, and it will sometimes work out just as desired. |

Sorry for going off-topic.
IMHO the days of the good old classic Brainwave Deck and its many similar variants is over. I feel that the alternate method Brainwave Deck (its MY own term - I will tell you in a moment ) is a much better alternative to the old classic. Both, the old classic as well as the alternate method has their own advantages & limitations. In the old classic the deck cannot be examined but the thought of card can be. Whereas, in the alternate method it's vise-a-versa - i.e. in this method you have an absolutely normal deck of cards with just 1 extra (additional) card - Thus the deck can be FULLY examined but not the thought of card. Keeping the above in mind, you need to decide (between the two) which one you consider to be better for your performance - Ah! You have a choice. OK, most of us know the classic Brainwave Deck and its working. For the alternate Brainwave Deck method I would suggest 'The Brainwave' effect in Magic Maker's 'Underground Magic' DVD. This method needs only one extra card. To know what kind of extra card is needed, you will need Magic Maker's DVD. However IMO Magic Maker's Brainwave is not perfect. It needs slight tweaking/ modification to make it NEAR perfect. In magic nothing can be called perfect/ ultimate. You always have room for improvement. The back of the EXTRA card needs to be spayed with transparent Repositioning Glue (a light coat will suffice); OR else use Double Sided Stick Tape ( I would personally avoid using DS Stick Tape). That's it! I have been using Magic Maker's method for years and it simply kills. Enjoy! Back on-topic please. P.S. I had talked and suggested the Alternate Method almost 12 to 13 years ago, right here on the Café.
