I've always liked the six packet display,cool right, but it was so incongruous with how you'd actually show the condition of a deck of cards: you'd do it exactly how you end triumph,by spreading out the deck.

There are two things to keep in mind, actually more than two, but for the success of many moves like this you need CONVICTION and MOTIVATION. The conviction comes into play I think in that you perform the display in a manner which belies the appearance of intent. You are "haphazardly" showing the cards. The impact is in the resulting display where multiple face-=up and face-down cards are visible at the same time. The average person likely concludes the entire pack is in similar condition. If you really want to show them mixed, you'd ribbon spread them, but in this instance you cannot. So you do something else which also shows a number of cards in topsy-turvy conditiion.

The motivation then is simply that, to show that the cards are hopelessly mixed. Presented as such, as described by a few posters, it seems that the performer is finding this out or at least confirming it for him or herself, not just for the audience's sake. The attitude should probably be, "whew! I've really got my work cut out for me!", or something to that effect.

What I think we need to be careful of is judging a move, any move, without fully understanding the HOW and the WHY.

Another example I can easily point to is the "righting of the pack" in many Triumph and Triumph-esque effects. As magicians we sit and wait for it and it is generally patently obvious. But if you watch some of the masters, that moment is obscured at times and seemingly flies by before you know it. It is because of conviction and motivation. The ability to understand what needs to happen and why and to then devise a strategy which camouflages what is really going on. Done poorly, without much though and like I said, it is patently obvious. Just a little work is all it takes to eliminate that appearance.
