I don't know if this is the place to post this, but I'm sure the moderators will move it if not.

What is going on at Penguin Magic?

They used to do weekly Penguin Live, then biweekly, now no schedule at all?
Also, they have had the same Bestsellers List for months.

Seems odd.

In the holiday compilation that they released at the end of last year, they said that they would be revamping the Live program. I think there are going to be a few per year from here on out.

Thanks, I didn't see the holiday compilation. Now, why does it seem like they are not updating the website?

I don't know the answer, but it's not a new situation--Penguin has never seemed to care about its home page. In fact, a quick check just now shows that it's more up-to-date than I've ever seen it. It featured Matt Johnson's "Melt" for many years.

I suspect that no one wanted to pay for the spot, so they just let it run. I know that I'm not the only one who knows what they want before checking to see if Penguin has it. It's just not the advertising giant that it once was. Great service, though!

I'm wondering about them as well. Seems like everything I click on to buy is "out of Stock".
Has the feel of a company on its last legs.

Penguin would do well - IMHO - to allow the option of having only "In Stock" items appear in any given search. There are far too many "out of stock" items that often appear in any given search. I understand that there is some value to including OOS items, but man, sometimes searches are a beating if you can't eliminate the OOS items.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I agree Chessman. Unless as 61magic noted, they are downsizing and selling down their stock or only ordering a few of each item, in which case the filter may make the search come up pretty dry.

However, I much prefer this practice versus not listing the product out of stock at all, and then getting the dreaded receipt that says, "Back Ordered." Argh. That ****es me off so much.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

Preach, brother Smile

I tried to order 2 items (on separate dates) from Daytona Magic. In both instances I actually got a phone call from the owner telling me the item was out of stock. He did do a bit of 'suggestive selling' re: alternatives, which I understand and don't mind (businesses survive on revenue, after all)...but if you don't have the item, don't list it as 'in stock'!

I’m not sure how long ago this happened to you, but I had the same experience when I ordered a book from Daytona Magic in 2015. They processed the charge then called the next day to try and offer something different that they had in stock. I called a reputable used book seller who is now retired to see if he had a copy or could get his hands on one. He couldn’t, but asked what shop I was dealing with. He subsequently made a strong point to say check your bank statement to ensure it gets refunded. I can’t speak of anything beyond my own experience, but the credible bookseller said Daytona was known for doing this. When it becomes the norm to bait and switch, it goes beyond just being an honest mistake.

On a Penguin related note - I’ve been purchasing from them for years and have nothing but good experiences with them. I do wish they had an out of stock filter when searching. One thing I’ve noticed is that the out of print books always seem to show an extremely discounted price. Of course it’s a moot point, but I found it interesting
