Okay I've edited out my previous post because apparently I revealed the method. All I can say is this method is as old as the hills. After watching Sankey do something similar for an ambitious card ending, I though- why not force a card that way. I learned very quickly after being laughed at by the boys at Tannens, that this technique is old old old school. How these guys can market this as something new is beyond me.

Joel or ChipmanNC,
Where can you find Barrie's manuscript? I would be interested in getting it, Barrie is a very creative and insightful creator! Thanks, Sixx |

He works on routines and tries them out in hundreds if not thousands of performances and cuts away anything that's not needed or is superfluous. |

The question posed was purely on whether the effect used a different method. However, I agree with you and I do like Bill's routining better. And I like Impression where the spectator handles the cards, which Bill does not have. If you do you own routines anyhow, it doesn't make a difference. But Bill's does have more presentation behind it. It's still cheap even at twice the price, as the saying goes.

True, the spectator deals the cards in Impression. But they don't turn over their card. They first have to give the deck to you, THEN they can pick up their card. Then after taking their card and signing it, they put it back and shuffle, then are told to just pull it out again. I can see that I suppose if for some reason the moment of magic was triggered by the shuffling but it isn't. The trick centers on you making a prediction before the effect so the returning/shuffling/pulling back out sequense doesn't make sense and it isn't justified. I get the feeling Yousif hasn't had this routine or performed it enough to "work out the kinks" and really begin to understand it. I feel it's an unfinished idea.

Hi,
Let me answer to some of the comments : Ixnay says : "True, the spectator deals the cards in Impression. But they don't turn over their card. They first have to give the deck to you, THEN they can pick up their card." Actually, they can put it on the table, they don't have to hand it to you. There is a good amount of misdirection that allows you to pull off the move even on the table. "I get the feeling Yousif hasn't had this routine or performed it enough to "work out the kinks" and really begin to understand it." Heh. In the manuscript, it states 2 ways of revealing the card. One of them involves returning the card in the deck. Why? Once I reveal the the prediction, a certain amount of suspense overcomes the spectator as they look for the predicted card, and it shows by thier reaction. This is not just some pipedream, this was and still IS audience tested. If you feel it isn't for you, then I cant help that. However, I do know that its not some unfinished idea, but an idea that works for me and others. I also offered alternatives for those who don't feel the way I do about that one revealing. Thanks, Yousif |

I can also say that Impression is not an untested item. I perform it regularly, and I have never failed, and it has never failed me. Misdirection is perfect. I have them place the card back in the pack after signing the back only, and not looking at the face.. I then fan through the pack until I reach a card with writing on the face, turn it over, and it is their card. This, to me, adds a lot of suspense if your presentation is good.
I am not familiar with Bill's handling, but I think I too will stick with Impression. Later, James Watkins |

Since both effects use an old old method that is original with neither, the question becomes, which effect has the stronger presentation and most audience impact? Problem-solvers will probably lean toward Bill's, since it is another step in one of card magic's most enduring plots.

I love impression.... have used it so many times and has NEVER failed.....
the magic is just fantastic.... I use a deck with all blanks.. and the only card they stop at is the only card that has a face on it. I will definitely stick to impression.... eric

And we got away from the fact that Barrie Richardson's "Impromptu Card at Any Number" came out first.
Like Bonnie Raitt said, "I miss Little Feat more than I miss being 8 years old." Thanks for the concerts + recordings, Lowell, Richie, and Paul!

I love both Impression and Boomerang! Use both in your act! Both use the same method but produce competely different results!! Sly |

Actually, it sounds identical to Brother Cyprians Solid Gold Prediction from his book... only difference was the good Brother used a prediction card in an envelope held by the spectator... ungimmicked deck etc... spectator dealt... all done about 25 to 30 years ago...

I like the idea of using a prediction card in an envelope held by the spectator for Boomerang! I think I will try that one out! This would definitely create a "WOW" when he actually opened the envelope up himself11 By the way, what book did Brother Cyprian put out? Sly |

I always have one question...
I think these kind of routines/presentations things should be better appear in books. If I spend like $20 for 2 pages of a book, and it is an old idea like stone, I don't think it worths. If I come up with a good idea of forcing a card, or a revealation, I will write it down in my magic notebook, wait until I have many wonderful (at least I think so myself) effects, I may release a book or lecture notes, share to other fellow magic friends. Do you agree? ^_^ Michael Lam

I tried letting the spectator deal to his number as suggested in the thread. I tried it twice with magicians & it seems that the spectator needs to keep the packet squared as the cards are dealt else the 'work' is seen..
Seems natural to NOT have it stayed squared as you deal a card. I will deal from now on.. |
