I'd like to perform an effect that involves three Chinese coins. I'd need two that are the same color on both sides...and one coin that has different colors on each side. (Ideally: Red/Red, Red/Red, Red/Black)
I'm having trouble finding such a set and I'm concerned that putting together my own set will involve some colors not matching. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I should proceed? Thanks in advance, Tony |

Have you seen N2G's recent lines of Chinese coins? https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/magician/N2G/
They have a lot of sets with matching coins, and you always have the option of mixing and matching various pieces to consolidate. That said, I think their HCC (hopping half) set would contain what you want (and more) what with the red/black coin, the normal red/red coin that's included as part of HH, as well an extra red/red and black black (judging by the pictures). Alternatively, you could go to pretty much any coin manufacturer that sells a two-faced Chinese coin - and they'll sell extra ungimmicked ones. Tango comes to mind, and it should be easy to buy just those three coins. I hope that helps. |

I believe Joker Magic has what you’re looking for.

I imagine a link would be helpful for the original poster and for future readers.
I know of one set of theirs "Chinese Color Change", but that wouldn't be what is being looked for here. |

Thanks for these responses. I believe Joker Magic did, in fact, turn out to have what I needed. I placed an order last night so I'll know for sure when it arrives.
Thanks for your help, guys. I appreciate it! Tony |

Can you share a link to the one you bought?

Sure.
This is the black/red one: https://www.jokermagic.com/product/joker......lar-size And this is the "regular" one with black on both sides: https://www.jokermagic.com/product/joker......lar-size They're coming from Europe so they're not here yet. I'll pop back in here and leave a review after I get them. Tony |

Ah, so just buying them independently - much as I suggested could be done with Tango. I'm glad to hear you found something you felt confident in.

Yes, buying them piecemail was the only way I could see doing it. (I believe the Hopping Half set involves thinner coins and other gaffs that wouldn't make it a good option for the effect I'm thinking of.)
Interestingly, part of the challenge was the fact that these Chinese coins come in a wide array of quality/build. Some of the worst ones I found (I believe by Tango) were actually just paper stickers on a metal disc. Others had the appearance of a square hole in the middle...but it wasn't an actual hole. After reaching out to Penguin and Vanishing Inc for direct assistance, I was surprised to find that neither of them had anything in stock nor could they direct me toward a single manufacturer who had everything "under one roof". So, I was glad for the Joker Magic recommendation. The only downside (so far) is that they're in Europe; so it's been about 11 days since I ordered and I still haven't received the coins. I requested some tracking information yesterday so hopefully I'll hear from them today. Tony |

See, that's the thing. If you bring up your concerns and needs, we can help you. I you don't ask the questions, you end up making decisions off of incorrect assumptions and information.
I agree - there is far too wide a variety in the Chinese coin sets. A lot are utter crap. We're also not going to recommend them... because they're terrible. Or at least I'd warn you first. Tango isn't the best, but there are also a lot worse (I'm not a fan of Roy's, for example). I haven't seen any that are _just_ a metal disk with stickers, though I have seen some that are just washers. The ones that tend to be stickers (and a fake hole) are the double-sided split coins. Mostly Jonny Wong's coins, but also N2G's CSTC - which I believe was a collaboration with Wong. But there are also a number of decent coins. You concern about hopping halves is a valid one ... for real coins. A lot of the time for manufactured coins they just make the coins slightly larger for a turtle rather than reducing - it's easier and requires a lot less work. It also easier when you're making multiple kinds of sets to just use the same base coins and different sized turtles rather then trying to match up some expanded and some reduced. I'm honestly a little shocked Vanishing inc didn't suggest the HCC set - https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/money-magic/hcc-coin-set/. Perhaps because they only carry the dollar sized ones and you wanted halves? I know they make both and sell them on the N2G website. I still maintain it's exactly what you wanted and high quality. Holes, and no stickers, all in one set. But given everything else, I'm very curious to hear your thoughts on the quality of the Joker Magic coins once you receive them. Keep us posted! |

I took a look at the coins @TonyRush purchased. They look great. The description makes them sound well made (brass). I may purchase some pending Tony’s report after he receives his.

Same thing with the assumption about all hopping halves sets using thinner coins. Then when you made the comment about slow (and presumably expensive) shipping from Europe, I expressed surprise and sadness that retailers couldn't point you to something that satisfied your needs "under one roof" when they had multiple options to suggest. They even have all three of the Tango coins you were interested in on the same page: https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/money-......se-coin/ Do I think you should have gotten the hopping half set, or even the Tango coins? I don't have a strong opinion. But I did think it was important to correct your knowledge for next time - and for any future readers. |

Tony Rush originally asked about putting together a set of Chinese coins of various color combinations. Based on my own experience in purchasing these types of coins from various makers for my use, I suggested Joker Magic. When I obtained my Joker Magic coins , my local magic shop had a good variety of color combinations , so I was able to pick and choose the colors I liked best. And, the shells could be shown on both sides, which I thought was a nice touch.
While the N2G type Chinese coins look very nice and have a nice weight to them, I found the shells to sound a little too “tinny” and the paint used on the coins seemed to chip and scratch easily. Also, I don’t particularly care for Tango’s style of Chinese coin (just my personal view). These are some of the reasons that I suggested Joker Magic Chinese coins. And, it doesn’t hurt that Joker’s price for these coins is pretty reasonable. |
