Hi Paul, I am curious about the reactions you get from this effect, it seems that your version is quite quick, and to the point. I am wondering about your thinking when you came up with this routine. you add the selection to the packet after the counts and then show that they all changed in one shot, himber switch, and there ya go. I am sure the reaction is great, I haven't tried it yet, but is the reaction better than when you change them one at a time.
I realize if you are working tables, that there wouldn't be any space to lay out the cards, and it seems like the safest approach to protect against grabby people too. Do you still perform this routine often? Oh and do you use any other wild card routines? Thanks Paul. Sean Macfarlane |

Hi Sean,
The slam-bam approach was designed for the exact reasons that you stated: There's no enough time in a table-hopping situation for card-at-a-time changes, in my opinion. I do not want to leave the gaffs out on the table for more than a second or two in case some does get grabby. Also, by taking the repetition out of the routine, I find the change from a packet of jokers to the packet of matching cards more startling. I have seen absolutely beautiful card-at-a-time Wild Card routines - notably by Darwin Ortiz and Eric DeCamps - but these are performance pieces for formal shows, in my opinion. All that said, I have abandoned the Workingman's Wild Card routine from the first set of lecture notes and I now use and teach Flip's routine, with his permission. I still use the switch wallet (that idea coming from Mr. Ortiz) and the same patter theme as is outlined in the WC routine from the fasdiu notes, but for the actual mechanics of the body of the trick I now use Flip's. His routine may be found in the Frank Garcia book on Wild Card - sorry don't have the reference handy at the moment. I also do the routine in my lecture now and it is included in the ACME Card Magic Workshop. Paul |
