Or dipping and removing your thumb & fingers in the liquid will also do. Allow the liquid to evaporate for about Half a minute and then wipe off any residue (usually water molecules) left on your Thumb & fingers with a dry cotton cloth. Give it a try and hopefully it should work. For very sweaty hands, apply just prior to start of performance. Hope that helps. Isopropyl based hand sanitizer might also work. No harm in giving it a try. I haven't given it a try. WARNING: Isopropyl Alcohol and Acetone are chemicals (though mild), but one need to take adequate precautions before using them. In case in doubt, consult your family doctor. P.S. Here is one more review in the offering - https://youtu.be/qZjvajwZsj4 It seems that hyping of this simple & straightforward effect will never stop. Under one excuse/pretext or another, the creator/producer are more interested in selling you a package worth $2 (except for the teaching video) to grab your money. It is Juan's teaching that's worth it, but the added $2 goodies are meant to exorbitantly hike the price factor(IMO). Just MY opinion.

I do remember Andy from Alakazam performing this last year or two ago (the original tapping presentation) and thinking it looked great but the presentation that Juan has put on it never occurred to me - does that make it worth the price? Possibly.. |

One of the reason given (at 09:53 Minutes) is that you are supplied with the so called "THEE PERFECT PENCIL" that Juan himself uses for the effect to work perfectly, and hence there was the need of releasing a physical product. Then, further down the video (at 12:25 Minutes), Jakob mentions he found a full box of pencils at a Dollar kind of store, which also was the 'PERFECT PENCIL' for the effect. WOW! Well that proves that selling a physical product is nothing but a way to takeaway your hard-earned money. Whom are we trying to fool and cheat? Overall Jakob's review was very good and detailed.

Any justification for sending a pencil through the post is farcical at best. Absolute joke. However, with so many gullible ‘magicians’ falling for the fantasy that they are receiving magical powder through the post then it will continue to happen. E must be laughing their heads off behind the scenes, counting the cash.

We are paying for Juan's intellectual property of the routine and the rights to use it. There were no stipulations placed on its usage either. There are many tricks and routines that have a 'no recorded or televised performances without a written consent' clause. Receiving the prop, I had it in my hands and no need to take extra time elsewhere to search for the supplies. When it comes to downloads and not receiving a physical prop/gimmick (something other than what is in my tools), I have the knowledge but I fail to follow up on getting the needed items or I do not have the expendable funds when I do find them.
As a download only and no props, I think $20 is a fair estimate. |

I am not a WE. I offered my own thoughts, whether it a simple pencil for this or possibly other items with other download only tutorials. some people appreciate the receiving of props, others do not. I have no need to justify my perceptions, only share a different view.

So you've got to go with your gut and expect the backlash from some. I think, for $30, we provided a well-shot, well-explained, well-presented routine/effect that came in a nice box, with good artwork and will have a lasting value for those who purchased it. |

I have sweaty hands and used to do Cardistry, so I already know what powder is helpful to keep my hands dry during practice to not destroy my decks too quickly. For the pencil, a quick visit to my local store gave me several types that I have been experimenting with and they are all perfect.
Having said all of that, and the fact that I am not always a fan of E, I am still okay with paying for Heartbeat with the props shipped. Maybe at the least, this will discourage some of the pirates out there, and protect this gem a bit more. |

The only issue people have faced is trying to understand the technique required to make the prop (in this case a pencil) work. After going through a few old manuscripts on the subject, I find that the procedure of holding the pencil and movement of the thumb lacked detailed explanation. Thus, for most performers, 'Heartbeat' video became a necessary audio-video teaching aid for understanding the basic principle (procedure & method) for the effect to work. Also 'Heartbeat' taught a unique presentation & method of using the principle and thus creating a nice effect that quickly became popular. IMO, the video-based teaching did full justice to the effect and there was (once again IMO) no need of bundling up a simple wooden pencil (as a special prop) so as to drastically hike up the price of the product for extra gains. This, IMO, is not good business ethics. Quote:

Thus the pirates start eating away the legitimate profits of the creator. This is nothing new and people have tried to fight this menace for ages but in vain. I have no doubt that soon one will see the Heartbeat video up for sale on these pirate sites for peanuts (as the contents of the Heartbeat package has nothing to be protected except for the highly hyped 'PENCIL'), thus selling hundreds of copies to our own unethical and unscrupulous clan out there. IMO, the teaching video is of good value, but the accompanying accessories - NO. I write what I think is right and good for our art and its people. I care less about those who go all out on a bashing spree (along with their friends, followers & supporters) trying to stop people from voicing their concern - Just to make those extra bucks. Just my thought, concern & opinion and the way I think. Take it if you like it or lets move on. Thank you.

Can this be done with a hard (or dried eraser end) instead of a straight wood pencil?

That could make for a super casual, impossible moment.
Had one of those moments Sunday morning on the golf course. The score card pencils provided were the exact unpainted pencil with no eraser. The difference was that the score card pencils are only 3 1/2 inches compared to the 7 inch pencil provided with Heartbeat. Worked like a champ! Now I have the perfect pencil for EDC to perform this effect. Fun Stuff |
