Youve been booked for a show on board!
You arrive-your 2 illusions are lost in transit! The boat is leaving in 2 hrs You can only take a 2-3 suitcases What 6-8 effects would you consider to take to entertain crowds of up 100 people!! Love to hear what really works!! I would consider- Chinese Linking Rings-Silk to egg- Comedy Zombie-Comedy Arm Chopper-Mental Epic -Bill in Lemon-Nest of Boxes etc Look forward to interesting routines!!!!! |

This question is discussed in the book "Hustle! Hustle!" by Joel Bauer. He discussed how to create a show on the fly when all your magic props are lost in transit.

Brent,
Been there, done that. What if you did not have any magic props? Then what would you use? Answer: Rope - Deck of cards - Newspaper - Small Plastic tubing to use as a Thumb-Tip - Baby Diapers. Now do you know what to do with these? Can you turn these into a real magic show. Sure! Steve Hart

Interesting post.
I agree ... learn mentalism and pickpocketing!! I have a friend who just got back from a cruise ship yesterday and the airline lost one of his bags. (he got them later on in the cruise). He got the comedian to open his show with 15 minutes and he finished it off with what he had. That's what will happen if you arrive on a ship and your luggage is missing. If I had only ONE book to take it would be Mark Wilsons little version of his 'big' MAGIC ENCYCLOPEDIA. (fits in my hand luggage:)) It's a great reference. I've been doing ships a few years now and have had my luggage lost several times and have been forced to use what they have on ships. Actually, for my comedy act I now use ONLY the items on the ship! As an exercise, make a list of all the effects that use props you can find around the house ... you'll quickly see you can develop an entire act with 'nothing' (think what Jerry Seinfeld did with 'nothing'). On board they have playing cards/selection of fruit for many effects/toilet paper etc etc. the list really is endless. It's a regular magical supply store on a ship. After you've been travelling like this for a few years you learn to really pack small and play big. To be honest, when I'm doing my solo act on the ships and I'm travelling all the time, I get two full 50 minute shows in one suitcase. My stand up comedy magic I do on the cruise ships fits is designed to fit in my carry on and can play on ships which have 800-1000 seat theatres. Trust me, it's NOT how many magic tricks you can do in the fifty minutes, it's definitely your presentation. My Chaplin act all fits in my normal suitcase along with my clothes and personal items. When my wife travels with me then we take more cases (I will say nothing else:)) Another thing to consider is most ships have excellent video screen and cameras so you can do a small close-up segment with the cameras and video screen. Again, pack small play big. As a side note: Fortunately today on ships, the company will have your illusions picked up prior to you leaving and they are always there when you arrive at the ship. You can always check with the port agent prior to leaving home to make sure they have arrived.
