Hi Dan,

I guess different bartenders handle this different ways. In my case I'm a bartender first and a magician second, so my first order of business is to make sure everyone's got a drink in front of them and a menu if they're going to eat. What I don't do is stop everything and do a "show." I do a little magic here and a little there, sometimes culminating in a multiple selection routine with the whole bar.

About 99% of the time I introduce myself and get the patrons names right when they sit down. If the place is real busy, then there just isn't time for magic - gotta make the drinks for those at the bar and for the rest of the restaurant via the service window.

However, when things slow down, I then have the opportunity to perform. Usually, someone will ask to see some magic, or a patron who's been in before will be talking to a first-timer and saying things like, "you ever see this guy do card tricks?" and I start in.

But since I'm already on a first name basis with just about every customer, even if I've only known them for a few minutes, it's easy enough to just walk over with the cards and say, "Here, I'll show you something cool." Or, a couple sitting and staring into space is an easy in; "Okay, it's too quiet over here, take a look at this..." and I start in. It's just a matter of being personable, friendly, caring, and giving good service. In the four years I've worked at the place I've never, ever had anyone refuse to see the magic. Especially after the first trick!
