Everybody's talking about video this, video that, video the other thing.
For God's sake, they're 30 bucks a piece! Are you all millionaires? I doubt it. I thought magicians had a hard time buying pizza, let alone a video library that would make blockbuster blush... I think I own 20. hmmm... well, that's more than I thought, but still.

I own about 400 videos, but I prefer books, of which I own about 1200.

I thought magicians had a hard time buying pizza let alone a video library I suppose that depends on how good you are, both at performing and marketing. For those who are not full-time pros, it depends on your real job. I know an amateur magician who is a high-end architect--his library puts mine to shame several times over!

Would your friend mind if I came over and stayed in a small tent in his library?

150 +/- Videos
50 +/- Audio 500+ Books The amount of books is not important though. It's what you do with them. I spend most of my time in very few volumes. Some are retained for future reference, but many are just idle curiosities any more. Steven

I know this is slightly off the subject, but I think that the amount of books or videos you posess doesn't matter, it's your knowledge.

Yes, obviously. somebody's pretty good at marketing and making us feel like if we just had that one extra video then we'd be set.
.. and then one more .. and then one more ... and pretty soon, we're like Scott over there, peeking out from behind a mountain of videos.

I know people who have more than most, and know close to nothing. I also know people who just go and read some one elses books and can learn them in a matter of minutes. But I still pose this question to you all.
What is more important knowing every trick, or knowing how to perform every trick you know? On my card it says Magical Entertainment... That's what I do entertain with magic, not do magic and hope you are not bored. I said it before and it still works here. I only have a few videos. Namely
Darylls ambitious card Alex Elmsley Tahoe Sessions Volume one Card Artistry of Andrew Winhurst Lennart Green vol 1 On the pass - Richard Kaufman Impossible card magic - ray kosby card tricks made easy - jerry sadowitz the last one was bought because it is quite rare. Books on the other hand, I don't think I even want to start to count. I have a room full of books, manuscripts and booklets I think videos are far too expensive for what you get (especially for viewing quality, some videos are serious bad.. There's a lot of really bad videos, especially ones which have things like "culled from the private archive of ____" on them). :D |

I own more magic vids and books than God.
Well, maybe not 400, but, you get the picture. I would say that 90% of the pages and tape are worthless to me, but the 10% was worth the cost. Although I'm about the same age as the naysayers, like Mike C. and Jon R., I absolutely love learning card magic from vids rather than books. To open a book with a deck of cards in your hands is worse than a root canal. The constant checking back to the page. . .oops, that's the previous page, finding your way to the place in the paragraph where you left off. . .is the real work. Gimme vids with over-the-shoulder shots. . . |

I own about 50 videos and around 600 books. But I must confess that I seldom watched a video more than once. Books are simply more suited to my stayle of learning and practicing.

Ok, here's a question for you guys with a lot of videos and books.
How many of the videos actually see regular play? and How many of the books get regularly cracked?

I think I'm down to one videotape now that I bought last year (then regreted)The max. number I ever had was five, but I never referred back to them (not as easy as flipping to something in a book anyway). Nash and Ouellet tapes, a T.A. Waters, the recent one was Knepper.
The beauty of books is that in searching for stuff you come across OTHER good stuff, lol. My books are full of bookmarks! Scott, that is an amazing video collection, are you thinking of replacing them all with DVD's? Paul. |

Video Tapes, around $30, I have about 10.
Books, I lost count. Having a collection of stuff I will never use, priceless.
By the time you read this, you've already read it.
