Jeez, I have like 8 books on Card Magic (all the good dover reissues, like Expert at the card table, card control, hugard's stuff.. and Annemann's card magic) and *I* thought I had too much literature cause this stuff would last me a lifetime.
Scott, how did you afford all those books if you don't mind me asking.. you must have a pretty high paying job or something.. I am a college graduate and everytime I decide to purchase a new title, my wallet starts to moan. Especially after purchasing the Annotated Erdnase. |

My friend, Elliott Walters, estimates his magic library at slightly over 8000 books; that's right, eight-THOUSAND books.
Beat THAT. Regards, Thomas Wayne

I find with videos and books that if i want to really learn something videos are never that usefull. For technique, finger placement, all that stuff, nothing beats a book with good pictures or illustrations. But sometimes a trick (like the erdnase one handed shift) is just so amazingly difficult i behin to lose hope in beeing ever able to do it with a lot of speed. Then I see something like Peter Duffie doing the riffle pass and I get hope again. It motivates me to know that I can one day be that good.

My fave vid, and it takes precedence over any book also, is an advertising vid Petrick and Mia puts out about their products. His bit with reels is, like, real magic, no pun intended. Fools dad and mom, kids.

Most of the books I have are older ones, and many are out of print. I have very few of the "hot, new" books unless they are reprints of old ones, magazine comilations (like Apocalypse) or about older magicians (Paul Curry, Stewart James). I do not do (nor would I want to) every trick out of every book and video. But that is not the point. I HAVE read every book and watched every video at least a couple of times, some many times. I am building a reference library, for several reasons: 1)to see how different magicians attack similar problems; 2)to see if a trick I "invent" has already been done; 3)to give credit for moves, sequences etc in my published routines; 4)because I want to. Further, unless it's a really difficult-to-find rare book, I rarely pay retail, because I usually buy used books or new ones from sellers who give me large discounts for being such a good customer! Finally, I let all the local guys browse through my library all they want. But with the exception of a couple of close friends, nothing leaves my house. I discovered long ago that it rarely comes back again once it leaves. Randy, I'll go recount right away for you!And Steve, Vic will be handling my estate--selling the stuff at a fair market value, proceeds to be given to my wife. Feel free to contact him with your credit card number if you hear of my death! BTW--if you DO hear of my untimely demise, make sure my wife still wasn't aware of how much those books REALLY cost!

i have about 50 Videos and about the same number of books.
I only had one magic video until about a year ago, when I bought a lot of over 35 magic videos from a fellow moving to the Orient. And when I began to see how much easier it was for me to learn from the videos, I kept buying until I found out that I had just bought my third copy one. (power of palming) and finally stopped buying them. My committment to myself was that I would not buy another until I had watched them all. And so I watch them........and some are really good, and some are stinkers - but at least I know which are which now. And I have picked up a lot of really nice stuff that I would never have realized was possible for me to do by reading it in a book. BroDavid

Last count, I had about 15-20 books, and about 40 or so videos, including a few DVD's (which I'm going to start getting more of -- I really enjoy the DVD's as a learning tool).

I've got maybe 20-30 books and around 8-10 videos/dvds. I prefer the books, but really like dvd for certain types of visual learning.
I think it's important to try to buy "quality" books and videos rather than just instinctively buying what's "new". Lots of gold in those older books!

Dittos Scott Guinn's post about the reference library.
I like seeing how someone thinks. While their latest twist on twisting the aces or matrix is interesting I think it is more interesting to see what brought them to that point. What makes their magic so good? John Carney's material comes to mind. fstarsinic...are you really serious about gallway does ramsey? If so I must be missing something. I fell a sleep watching it...twice. Of the videos I've watched...Sleight of Dave and Sleight of Dave 2 were great. I am looking forward to going to Midwest magic Jubilee but am going to try and purchase wisely....quality rather than tonnage.

I own 5 videos, and 11 books, and thats already a heavy load of material for me to digest. To you guys with the big collections, on any given book or video, what percentage of the material do you actually make use of? With videos I tend to utilize a larger percentage of the material. I know people slam Ammar left and right around here, but on Card Vol. 1, I use 9 of his 10 tricks on a regular basis. I do feel the bite of the magic bug though and have 6 more books I'm chomping at the bit to get. No new "must have" videos for me at the moment
