This presentation would be ideal for young magic couples that perform together on stage.
The magician's wife comes up on stage in a standard dance leotard. The magician talks about a special closeness that he and his wife share, and it's a bond that can't be broken by anybody. The magician then puts on a chastity belt over his wife's leotard. "Now, I have here seven keys, only one of which will open the chastity belt. I will have 6 of you pick a key, leaving one for me. Whoever gets the correct key..." ;) |

Scott,
The "Chastity Belt" is being sold by Stevens Magic Emporium and the routine itself was developed by Pete Biro some time ago. PSIncerely Yours, Paul Alberstat |

Really?!? That figures. Oh well, I least I know I came up with a marketable trick!
I hate when I think I've come up with something original, and I found it's been done before. Probably the weirdest incident of this type is when Ben Harris and Kenton Knepper both came out with a torn card effect using the same method at the same time, just a few years ago. |

When someone comes up with a new effect or move and then discovers it has already been developed by someone else...hmmm, isn't that called Harry Lorayne Syndrome? <g>

In the Art of Astonishment, there's an unusual linking card trick called "Osmosis". The creator at one point refers to "the topological link credited to Harry Lorayne." Harry Lorayne went on a rant about this in Apocalypse. Harry wrote, "CREDITED to Harry Lorayne?!? Why not INVENTED by Harry Lorayne!!!!" My answer? Because Harry Lorayne didn't invent it! Terry LaGerould (of Pasteboard Presentations fame) invented it! Terry once showed Lorayne just the topological link portion of his own linking card routine, and Terry was surprised to see it uncredited in Harry Lorayne's next book! If you've ever seen Terry Perform the full version of his linking and unlinking card routine, you'll understand why there's no doubt that Terry invented it. You can see the same thinking that created the topological link all the way through Terry's routine. (Hmmm...maybe we'll have to put that in Pasteboard Presentations 3) |

Scott: I know this is years after the fact, but - if you can prove that I ever met Terry LaGerould, much less that he ever showed me anything - I'll you know what, in Macy's window. You really should check your "facts." HL

PPS: You and Mr. Thoughtreader really know what the heck you're both talking about. As I said, I know this is years after the fact, and nobody cares, but it makes me feel better! HL

Scott, I had the same problem a few years back. I was working on put my stage show together and was walking in a Home Depot. I saw this tool belt and it suddenly gave me the idea for a funny chastity belt presentation using Key-r-rect.
Boy, did I think I was a genius! I put it together, worked out the patter line, and patted myself on the back. The night before my first performance I got a Steven's catalogue. What do you think was there? A large ad for Pete's Chastity routine and then I find out he had it years ago. It smarted. And then I hated Pete even more for having the nerve to invent a time machine to go to the future and steal my idea then go back and market it. He's the devil! Greg

The greatest case of duplication I have been involved with, occurred when two magicians thousands of miles apart, Kevin Wade in Ohio and Jon Allen in England, called me within 45 MINUTES of each other to discuss a new effect they wanted to market called Phobia...
The effects were very similar but they each had different endings... they each brought out their own effect and the world keeps spinning.. |

I was just made aware of this confusion when Terry mentioned a letter he received from Harry recently. Terry showed the linking card routine to John Fisher, who is also a good friend of Harry Lorayne's. John Fisher later related the routine to Harry, and Harry does give credit to Terry for the concept in Quantum Leaps. I apologize for the confusing term "showed", and did not mean to imply there was a moment when Harry met Terry. This should both clear up the confusion, and give great relief to viewers of Macy's window. |

John Fisher did not show me the routine I devised and published, and have used for decades. What Terry mentioned to me was a different ENDING only, different than the one I teach and use. I included it in QUANTUM LEAPS and gave him full credit - for that ending, NOT for the basic routine.
I'd like this to be clear, which I don't think it is yet. You're making it seem like - oh, Terry didn't actually, in person, show Harry the routine, he taught it to John Fisher who, in turn, showed it to Harry. THAT SIMPLY IS NOT SO. Let's be clear, the Linking Card routine as taught in QUANTUM LEAPS is MINE. I'm keeping that shade up in Macy's window! Best - HARRY LORAYNE.

So Harry, while you're setting the record straight on your magic inventions, check out your Bio on my Brief Biographies of Magic Inventors and you'll see that I list a lot of the books you have written, but not a single magic invention. Besides The Linking Card, what others should I be giving you credit for?
