Tonight I was doing some card magic for a small group of people in my local restaurant, and while they were enjoying it, one of the men in this group-I would say in his early fifties- started swearing under his breath. It started out as a low murmer, almost a chant, but it grew louder and more "violent". All the while he was staring at my hands but with a far away look. I started inwardly panicking but I held myself tgether for the sake of the others who continued to enjoy the tricks and inexplicably ignore this friend of theirs. Eventually I could hold off no longer as the swearing tuned to screaming of near Hitlerian proportions and everyone else in the room stared at him motionless with shock. I asked the others in the group what was wrong with him - honestly I thought he was going to kill somebody - and they said :"Dont worry..thats his way of showing that he is enjoying your tricks". I couldn't believe it and felt very scared. I couldn't believe what happened next! Has anything like this happened to anyone out there reading this? And what on earth do you do about it?!!

Maybe card tricks remind him of being in 'Nam. One minute your twisting aces, the next minute Charlie owns the night.

I think paulajayne must be correct. That's a classic description of Tourette-Syndrome. The fact that his family say he’s just enjoying your tricks seems to confirm this. However, I am not a doctor, so this is just a guess.
I’ve met someone who had Tourette-Syndrome and I subsequently read a lot about it. People with this often will often have tics, i.e. involuntary muscle movements. Verbal tics are less common, but they are probably the best-known attribute of Tourette-Syndrome by the public. It's very hard on the person with Tourette-Syndrome as this is obviously an impediment to normal social discourse. Note that the term involuntary is probably inaccurate. People with Tourette-Syndrome say they have powerful compelling urges, kind of like the urge to scratch an itch, but much stronger. They can fight these urges for a while, but when they do, the urges and episodes later are much worse. If he had Tourettes, he was probably fighting these urges your entire performance, which explains the slow build-up followed by an apparent explosion. Tourette-Syndrome does not make someone dangerous. Again, this is all conjecture since I'm not a doctor and I don’t know him, but given your description, I would be surprised if he doesn't have this.
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.

The impossible things are often the untried.
Magic is not what you see. It's about what you make others see. |

Tony Rawls posts this stuff and the Rawls on the floor laughing at the responses. Isn't this the same guy (Yes it IS) that wanted a trick to do on national television that could be done with a borrowed item, needed no sleight of hand skill and no practice? Tony Rawls = T.Rawls = Trawls = Fishes. He's catching some BIG ones with this one. It's like U.N. Owens
Did anyone besides me figure this out?

The answer is obvious...
He is a Communist, no other explanation for his crazy behaviour, all Communists act that way which is why Soviet Communnists drank Vodka, to calm their crazy behaviour down. What? Did you think Vodka was just a strong drink? So foolish!

I remebered the "I don't know anything about magic, but teach me something for T.V. post". I was trying to give Tony a chance. It is hard after that first post.
It is somewhat weird that last week he didn't know sleight of hand and this week he is working in a restaurant. He's been doing magic for two weeks and he's already been on T.V. and he works a restaurant. Nice work Tony. Can you get me a job? |

Man, Jerry Sadowitz is such a prolific poster. And I thought he hated magicians.

He sounds like a totally different person. I thought he hated us. Hmmm, come to think of it... could this be another Tony Rawls? Or is he just too desperate to reach that 50 posts?
