Just found this one and thought it rather good.
A hundred and one
by fifty divide
and if a cipher
is rightly applied
The answer is one from nine

Using Roman numerals, a hundred and one is CI and fifty is L.
Divide CI by L gives CLI, add cypher (0) to the right gives
the answer: Clio, being the name of one of the nine muses from
Greek Mythology.

A valuable assist from my mate Google.
The trouble with most riddles/puzzles is that the answers are 'out there' on the net.

Maybe the whole point of riddles and the main enjoyment derived from them, is to work them out for yourself. O.K. this is not always possible, and most of us have the recourse to find the answer from various sources, but by putting down the answer you found from a website, and possibly spoiling the enjoyment of others, is I think missing the point.

I think if you look at the speed with which a lot of these have been solved I wasn't the only one looking for an instant solution, or the solver knew it already and replied straightaway. In fact many replies have said as much.

So what's the solution to the riddle of known answers. Do we all have to wait a week for everyone to digest the question and work it out for themselves? Then all rush to answer.

If you want to test the brains out there in the Café, originality is obviously the key.

I don't test the brains on the café. Or expect originality.

Pleasant surprises can happen.

A classier way to handle riddles is to PM the poster about the answer.

I'm sorry, but if you're not testing brains on a riddle/puzzle section, then what exactly are you doing?

And I've seen some original thinking problems here that people have taken time to construct, rather than trawl through existing resources, and they make an excellent challenge.

"PM the poster" might be classier, but from studying the threads it seems that if you know it you post it!
