it’s what the spectators perceive you as doing that matters. That’s the MAGIC they’ll remember.” |

My favorite - audiences too, is made from a slice of tree branch with bark still on. For me, 1 1/2" in diameter and 2 " thick. You hands may vary.
Drill a 3/8" hole, get some help rope or think rawhide thong and you are set. Folks love the tactile thrill of natural object.

I'm a bit more traditional than Ken (one of the most creative magicians I've had the pleasure to read). I estimate that I've made about 50 of these props over the decades. I tend to use any square (in cross section) bit of wood, plastic, or metal and cut a cube. Drill a hole through it. The hole size is determined by the rope/cord that is going through it. I dip the rope ends in paint or plastic dip to harden/stiffen them, or use stink wrap to get a shoelace look. Treating the ends will permit smooth and easy threading of the rope on the block.
A bit of sandpaper cleans up the cut block. Paint, stain, varnish or leave natural in accordance with taste and aesthetics. Now to find a tree limb and try out Ken's idea.
