Hey guys!
I was wondering what everyone’s favorite self working prediction card tricks were. Thanks for the input! |

Harry Lorayne has a great one in The Magic Book which I believe is called "Prediction." Check out the presentation in the Afterthoughts section. If you have good audience management skills, you can have your spectator handle the cards the majority of the time.
The best one I have read in a L O N G time is "Emotional Reaction" in Inner Secrets of Card Magic. It is almost ridiculously simple; but do not judge it by its simplicity. This will rock someone's life if you present it properly. Bill Simon's "Business Card Prophecy" is not strictly speaking a self-worker, but it is pretty darn close. It can play equally well on a stage with over-sized cards or in an intimate close-up setting. |

I don't think there is a prediction in Emotional Reaction.

It depends how strict you are about your definition of a prediction (and self-working). The following spring to mind...

They shuffle, then you find the one card that will work for the trick. They make all the decisions yet the prediction builds to a great four-of-a-kind climax. It is great trick that went right into my "working set". Highly recommended!

Magicfish --- my first time checking back on this thread since my last post, and you are correct; there is no prediction involved, just a revelation. (But WHAT a revelation!) My apologies. I think I was just really excited to share this trick with people....

Recently, I've enjoyed performing "Pinetti's Prediction", which I published on my blog a few months back.
This trick is based on one called "How to guess a Card that has been thought of by anybody, by writing before hand on a Paper or Card a Number, which will certainly be that of the Card that has been thought of". Snappy title, huh?! It first appeared in Physical Amusements and Diverting Experiments by Professor Pinetti, which was published in English in 1574! When I first read this trick, I thought it was rubbish. But it is strangely effective and gets a good reaction. As a follow-up to this trick, I perform another prediction called "Pythagorean Prediction", which is based on an ancient mathematical principle also published by Professor Pinetti and later by Bert Allerton, Henry Christ, and John Scarne. Here's the description of the effect: First, a spectator thoroughly shuffles a pack of Piquet cards, and you write a prediction on a piece of paper. Then, you deal the top card of the pack face up on the table and note its value. Next, you deal cards into a pile so the number totals ten. For instance, if the face-up card is a Three, you deal seven cards to the table, and then the rest of the pack is placed on top. The new top card is dealt face-up to the table, overlapping the first card. Once again, you deal cards to the table to make the card's value equal ten. The process is repeated again, leaving three random cards face up on the table. Finally, the sum value of these three cards is calculated. For example, the total would be thirteen if the three face-up cards are a Three, a Four and a Six. Finally, the same number of cards as the sum value is dealt from the pack, in this case, thirteen, and the last card dealt is turned face up. To everyone's amazement, you reveal that you wrote this card's name on the piece of paper before the trick began! If you're familiar with self-working and semi-automatic card magic, you'll likely recognise the principle at work here. It really is a fantastic trick. And the "Pythagorean ritual" presentation really sells the mystical prediction. Marty P.S. Want to learn more about Professor Pinetti? Read Legends of Legerdemain: Professor Pinetti. |
