Do you need all 6 balls to make the tick work? Could you just get buy with 3 of the 6?

You could get by with only 3. When I perform this effect, I only use three of the balls. The only time it would be an issue is if you were doing a routine where you wanted to use two sets of balls of the same color. Other than something like that, it's no problem to get by with three.
