Hello All,
New to the boards. Matter of fact this is my frist post. I was doing a show at an elementary school. This was maybe 25 years ago but it has always stuck to me. I did a clown/magic act back then and was working with Handyman Negri (Joe Negri) from the Mister Rodgers show. Well, we started and I was introduced and did a few effects and decided it was time for an assistant. So, I asked and a child in the front raised his hand and waved it quite a bit. I decided he was the most animated and picked him. He came up just beaming with a smile. I then started to do a sponge ball routine and he was loving it. He was just laughing and giggling the whole time. I finished and he went back and sat down and enjoyed the rest of the show. We had finished and was in the process of packing up when one of the teachers came over to talk to me. She thanked me up and down for picking the boy. I found out then that he had been at the school for a while and was slightly retarded. They also told me that they had trouble getting him to talk to people and never wanted to be picked. The teacher said when she announced to the class they were going to a surprise assembly to see Handyman Negri and a magician he was the first in line to get up front. I then asked if I could see him? The teacher took me to him and I shook his hand and gave him the sponge balls that I used. I do no think I have ever seen a child smile that much. I found out later that he had become a bit of a chatterbox and wanted to try new things. It is those events in your life that really make the magic. I have had some similar happenings but this was the very first that just floored me. Keep the magic Alive!!!!

What a great story!! It's amazing how magic can reach those special children. I have a 10 year old autistic step daughter. She never really understood magic....until one day I was showing her my rings. I demonstrated that if I blew on the linked rings, they would unlink. You should have seen her eyes the first time I demonstrated the effect. Now she blows on things that are stuck together. Magic has more powers than any of us even realize.
