The best thing to do with a D-Lite is to go to a psychic fair and peruse one of the many crystal booths. Say nothing but fiddle about with many of the crystals until you know that the operator is watching you. Pick up one of the crystals and make it glow, look at it a bit and then put it down and walk away looking disintrested. It is especially wonderful if you have a friend who can come by the booth a few minutes later and cause the same crystal to once again glow with psychic energy.

Payne,
I like that one. I like that one a lot. I think I'm going to be annoying the heck out of a few people at the new age store very soon!!! This leads to an idea of incorporating it into a routine I do with a crystal that I manipulate and "cause" it to change shape to a polished stone (that may soon glow). Thanks. Magnus |

At one time in my show, when I started to introduce effects with a mental flavour, I used D'lites to visually portray the plucking of thoughts from the air. No great amazement here, but definitely a visual interlude to an otherwise rather un-visual effect.

Kids love this trick. I start by going to my case to look for my next trick (which I secretly put on) and then I say I can't find it. I say I must have dropped it somewhere before the show and walk out into the audience asking if anyone's seen "it." Of course no one knows what I'm talking about.
I will then walk up to one of the kids and stare at their forehead, getting very close to them but not making eye contact. This always gets a good laugh. Then I say, "Ah there it is! My lucky red light bulb" and I pluck from their ear. I do a bit of D'light juggling business, swallow it and pull out of me own ear, vanish it and pluck it from another kid's ear, the kids go crazy and they all want me to take it out of their ear. If one kid looks really anxious I take him on stage and face him towards the audience as I stand behind him and I pass the D'light in one ear and out the other. This also gets a laugh. How long I continue the routine depends on the excitement of the audience. I usually end by tearing it in half and folding up a devil's hank, which you can even have a someone else hold, depositing the gimmicks into the hank and vanishing it all. Ends totally clean. |

I use D'lites relativley often. One of my favorite things to do is pluck lite from elevator direction lights. If you have ever noticed the lights in elevator lobbies that indicate the elevator is going down is the same color. I just walk up and grab a little light as I enter the elevator and pop it in my mouth. I get strange looks and just say "lite snack". I don't think it entertains anyone else more than me, but that's OK.
I also have a little routine I do for small children that uses my three-year-old daughter. She eats the light snacks. The other children always want some and it is funny to watch them feel for it with the tongue when I pop it in their mouth for them. It is done very tastefully (no pun intended) and does not make the children feel silly, but makes them laugh.
He who laughs, lasts.

It reminds me of an old Jimmy Durante (I believe) bit in which he slowly sweeps up the follow spot that's on him, until the stage is dark. Hi, Peter, I believe that was Emmett Kelly, Sr. He'd sweep up a spot of light and eventually put it in his pocket. I remember seeing him do this on the Carol Burnett Show decades ago. Cheers, TCR |

I did a routine with D'Lites once, accompanied by the song "The Electric Slide".
Then I got worried about using the song without the rights and never did it again. It didn't go over that big: 1. Because the audience was older than me (Can you say "ancient"?) 2. I let it go a minute too long. 3. I didn't prepare well enough...shame on me. 4. It just didn't fit my style and I should have known better. I still think a pair of D'Lites and a good musical accompaniment and a short routine by the right performer would play well - just not by me. I bet Justin could pull this off. Regards, Doug

I like to use the D'lite with Dean Dill's "Spotlight" routine.
(a sponge ball absorbs the light from a penlight, lights on it's own and then the light is plucked from the ball)

Sometimes I used D'lite as a joke. I took out red light from my friend's head and at once my friend stopped to move and talk like a doll. I explained that I took out his soul and replaced it. My friend started to talk again like nothing happened. You need the support of your friend but it looks funny.
Thanks, yken |

Wow, there are some really great ideas and routines in this thread. I too had the lites for a while before I felt I had some sort of routine down that I thought was acceptable.
Recently I have begun by taking a small red silk in my left hand and asking the kids if they've seen my lost red light. I casually rub my right hand along the red silk while I'm asking this. Of course all the kids are trying to tell me what's happening. I try to put the attention on the silk as a magic silk which takes away the heat from where the light is actually coming from, and from there go into the routine. I slide quickly with my right hand and pluck the light off the silk. Just a couple of things I do. Keep up the thoughts guys, I really like this thread. JoJo--> Magic clown in Taiwan

yup when i worked with them over 4 years ago i think ??? we sold 300,000 in a year. now they've tripled that per year "I think" what really saved them was when the patent came through and they threatened all the big jobbers that they would take them to court. so they stopped making it in mexico and in garages and started buying them back from d'lite (which is only right).

And by the way, Dean Dill has another, new light product out that uses his tie. He showed it at LVMI. Looks great! Thanks for all the ideas here, guys. Steve H

I use them at the beginning of my kids show to "Pull the magic out of the air". O place it in my wand. I also do effects where I eat the light and eat them and eat them till, to my great horror, my stomach starts to buldge and i end up pulling the lights out of my belly button, ears eyes (Sorry no...No ifs ands or BUTTS about it)on the video they also light up stuff. I like the eariler post about lighting up a chrystal.

I wanted to mention that I used an idea from someone here that has been working great. After I put some of the lights in my mouth, I put my two middle fingers on either side of my nose and my thumbs behind my ears and make a funny blowning noise and at the same time push my thumbs against the back of my ears. The kids really seem to think it very funny and cute.
Keep up the good ideas here as it's sure helping me a lot. JoJo

Paul Zenon in the UK did a routine similar to what Justin was taking about on one of his TV specials.
He was about to introduce his next trick when a red laser pen (stooged) flashes on his chest, Paul then picks this up using the D'lite and then eats it. His ears then turned red!! Dave

I take the ideal of pointing a laser a little further. I will shine the laser on a table and show that you can't wipe it off. I then shine the laser on someone's shirt next to me and pluck it off. The next move is a killer because then I place the D'lite to my shirt and remove my fingers. The red light is seen on my shirt just sitting there by itself. I usually end it there saying it eventually fades away and it does. I will from now on pluck it off my shirt and eat it so my ears will turn red!
I wired a special light that is inside my shirt and have a switch I press with my wrist to achieve this. All the stuff to make this can be purchased at Radio Shack. Anyone interested in what it takes to make this PM me and I'll tell you what light to buy and what battery source. ![]()

The D'lite is the core of many of my wife's routines. They range from an enchanted beverage to jewels coming to life. I really don't want to know our investment in the props. I just have a happy wife.
As a ballerina she has been able to create many beautiful and graceful routines with the prop. She hates email, but catch us at a convention sometime and she will talk your ears off if she learns that you are looking for D'lite routines. All of her D'lite routines are music only. She will be performing her newest D'lite routine at the Cavalcade of Magic in March. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

O.K. everyone, I'll share my routine. It goes over with great success with any age audience. Here it goes:
I remove a little laser pointer from my pocket and tell the audience that they know they are not to shine the light in their eyes. I then, quickly, shine it in one of my eyes (briefly). I then explain that the light from the laser can be temporairly "stored" in the nailbase (fingernails) of your fingers. I shine the laser on my left thumb for a moment. When I turn the laser off, my thumb is glowing. I then throw the lite from hand to hand and tell them that some people think I'm crazy. I then procede to pass the lite through my head from ear to ear several times. I then tell them that some people think I'm on drugs. Then I "snort" the lite and cough and out comes the lite. I then tell them that some people think I'm full of it. That's when I swallow the lite and remove it from my rear. I then may toss from hand to hand and then take the lite with my right hand and slowly open it to show that the light is gone. Sometimes I will reintroduce the laser pointer and shine it on my left thumb again as if I'm allowing the lite to return to the pointer. (Note: I don't always bring the pointer back out and will just end with the disappearance of the lite). I hope you all will enjoy this routine. I've been sitting on it for a year or so. Like I mentioned, it has always gone over well for all ages. It is usually the effect they talk about after the performance and will often beg me to do it again. I simply explain that if done too often it can damage the nailbed of my fingers. I have had an absolute blast performing this routine and have no plans on retiring it anytime soon. Get yourself a small laser pointer and go to town. If you feel compeled, PM me with your thoughts. Now, go forth and amaze! Have a blast!
Wishing you all the best. Your brother in magic, Lee Foley III. ![]()
