Coming back from Key West I stoped at a rest area and I used a vending machine. I put a dollar in and it gave my a golden coin dollar. That new one with the Indian on it. I used it. Then my sister put a dollar and a silver colored coin came out. I took it out and messed and laughed saying she had been robbed and it gave her a quarter back instead of a dollar. Then I gave it back and she went to put it into the machine when I noticed something and jumped for the coin. I examined it and it was a Susan B. Anothony Silver Dollar. I had never seen one and I bribed my sister a dollar and 50 cents for it because it meant nothing to her but a bag of chips. But this being the first time I had seen one I was wondering how rare they are and if there worth has went up any.

Yes! The Susan B. Anthony dollar coin is worth a – Dollar! But then the paper dollar is only worth 75 cents or so! (Sorry, I couldn't resist that! As of last month, Susan B's can still be bought for their face value plus postage from the treasury.)

Well I pretty much new they wouldn't be worth anymore than they were back then. But I was just thinking how rare they have become to find on the street.

The Susan B. Anthony silver dollars didn't catch on for the very reason implied in your intial post...they were often mistaken for quarters because they are almost the same size and color. This is part of the reason behind the new dollar coin being gold. Neither is common in circulation because we Americans are stubborn and prefer our more familiar one dollar bills. However, if you go to a bank and ask a teller, you should be able to get Sacajewea and Susan B. Anthony dollar coins if they have them on hand. Finding Eisenhower is the tricky part!

Mumblepeas, don't complain! You could be up here in Canada, where our dollar is only worth two-thirds of yours!
And Paul, I never understood why the dollar coins never caught on south of the border until I realized that dollar bills were allowed to remain in ciruclation.
In Canada, when the government brought in the dollar coin (the "loonie", because of the picture of a loon on the back) and the two-dollar coin (the "twoonie", for rhyming reasons, I suppose), those bills were withdrawn from circulation as quickly as possible.
So now there are no paper one- or two-dollar bills in circulation; just coins.
And now we all walk with a pronounced list to the side that we carry our money on. Smile

cheers,

Could you not use the gold and silver one dollar for copper silver routines?

To me, a one doller bill is much easier to carry and store then a one dollar coin. I don't see why Canada took the bills out of circulation.

But not all bills in the US took hold... for instance the $2 bill never seemed to catch on, even though I thought it was a good idea. Go figure Smile
