Trevor Duffy makes an excellent pad. I'm not sure where to get one, but a quick search on the internet will point you in the right direction.

What about the close-up pads Penguin Magic sells? You can get one for $11.95, or is the quality lower? They have almost the same size. I don't have one.

Check out Wal-mart in the home section for a good cheap practice mat (less than $7.00) and in an assortment of colors. It is actually a small door mat but works great! I sure use mine alot.

I SAW those small door mats and got the same idea! But I wanted one with felt and a lot of firm padding for my chop cup routine (which is becoming literally amazing thank you.)

The magic warehouse has a lot of different close-up pads. Check them out.

Dean Dill makes some very nice (and expensive) pads. Mr. Dill has a website where you can order one. http://deandill.com/home.html

I bought a sheet of thin (1/2 - 3/4 cm maybe) foam rubber from a local craft shop for £2. Then, I bought some nice felt-like material, that kinda feels like velvet, for another £2, and glued the two together. Hey presto! One superb and super cheap closeup mat.
Then I made some stencils out of card, and spraypainted a design onto the surface of the mat, around the edges. It's much nicer than any store bought mat that I've seen, and you get more satisfaction knowing that you've made it yourself! RandomDan |

I bought a close up pad by Trevor Duffy some time ago at a magic convention. I don't remember who sold it to me. It is by far the best magic pad I have ever owned or seen. The surface is wonderful. I had searched for a source for another one, if I recall these were from Africa or something. Thanks for the link, I will order another one. I believe this surface allows you to do things that other pads don't. It is very fast and smooth. Just great.

What defines a quality close-up pad? Why is one better than another?

Jerry Andrus has for years used carpet remnants, so you can see it's not the quality of equipment that makes the magician good. However, there are some practical things you need to think about. I work parlor shows at private parties. I use a pad on my table, but no one really gets too close to it for me to worry about rough treatment. If I were working a bar or walkaround at restaurants, the spectators would constantly be handling the pad, so I would need to make sure it would hold up well. For my parlor shows, I use a dark blue Apollo pad and have used the same one for a couple of years. If something was spilled on it or greasy fingerprints got on it, I would have to replace it. Trevor Duffy's pads, however are very sturdy and completely washable. They last for a very long time under rough conditions. They cost a little more (but not much more), but are worth every penny extra. The only thing they lack for me is a variety of colors. Like I say, I prefer dark blue as opposed to black. |

I also like Trevor Duffy's pad. As mentioned above, if your spectator is close enough to touch your mat, they sure will. The kids are the worst, they always pic at the edges, causing the surface to separate from the rubber. I haven't had this problem with the Duffy pads though.

The Schol For Scoundrels has a couple close up pads at http://www.chefanton.com/entertain/Newest%20Products.htm but I cannot verify them from personal experience. But remember this is Chef Anton/Whit Haydn's site!

I don't know what it's called, but I use a washable one (Like the one on Ellusionist, but much better). It has yellow lines around the border (Except on the side facing you), with pictures of four aces on the corners. I've had it for about a year now, and it's as good as the day I got it. I don't plan on ever getting another one (At least not for a few decades), as this one shows absoluetly no sign of wear, and works great.
BTW, it's the one I use on all my videos and MagicShane (Link in my signature). Shane Wiker |

For a guy who has no much money like me, I use a large mouse pad as a substitute for it. It's cheaper and does almost what close up pads do..

Wow! No one ever mentioned Gibson, Apollo or Zeus pads here.
Maybe those Trevor Duffy and Dean Dean close up pads are really great! |
