Sadly, many of us are leaving Magic for one reason or another.

This can lead Magicians or their families to give or sell all of their Magic Tricks to a Magician who did not personally choose the Magic and may not be familiar with the tricks.

Often we don't know where to turn to find it a good home or use it ourselves because we don't have any idea of: What is it, who makes it, what is the effect, what is it called etc...

Part of my post did not make it in after an edit.

Too bad. LOL just kidding. It would be difficult to set up a forum to cover such a wide range of topics. Most members just use the forums we have.

Yes, but that often leads to listing things in the wrong forum because we don't know what it is.

There are some Magicians here who have a great depth of general knowlege who I'm fairly sure would check out such a forum regularly.

Have you al ever had a trial period for a Forum to see if there was interest enough to sustain?

I don't think we've ever set up a forum on a temporary basis. I don't set up forums so ultimately this is Steve's decision. If he agrees, maybe he'll have an idea. Thanks for the suggestion

How about the forum "Let's make a magic deal" ? Often if have the instructions-it shows who made it. Or maybe a Magic Assoc. would have needed information Just a thought.

The tricks I'm talking about don't have any instructions (or perhaps all the parts). They are often part of an estate and the instructions were not kept with the trick.

Are you talking about a Magic Assoc. like IBM or SAM?

Thank you Russo.

That forum is only for selling or buying an item. Mary is looking for a forum to use if no or little information is known about something.

I think this is a great idea. I have purchased some lots of magic items that the auctioneer did not know anything about them other than they were from the family of a magician who passed away. Since there was effectively no description but looked like quite a few effects, I was able to win the auction but still do not know what some of them are!.

Although this is my first post, I have read numerous posts and continue to be impressed with the knowledge & willingness of members of the group to help others.

Possibly a thread as Mary suggested “What is this?” Once answered, additional questions or requests for information could be posted in the correct forum, once known.

Again, thank you for the Magic Cafe!

Hi Mrbillmc,

This is just the kind of thing I'm talking about.

Our history is being lost by the box full.

The history isn’t being “lost”. It’s still out there. It’s just that modern internet frequenters in all walks of life have become accustomed to getting such answers handed to them. Think back 40 years ago. We were ecstatic to get a lead; to get “I don’t know but Mr. Magico might, and if he doesn’t, he knows who does.”

And back then you could tell in a heartbeat who was flapping their gums without a clue. These days the internet is loaded with “I have no idea but I think…” geniuses. Interesting that I see far less of that here than out in the general www.

Very true, yet 40 years ago, there many more brick and mortars we could frequent for those 'in search of' aspects.

Yes, time marches on. Our local Magic Shop is closed as well (and we all miss it!).

Many of the people I would have asked for info. have passed. Asking at the Magic clubs will only get you so far.

This seems like a good case for "Magicians helping Magicians" as happens on a daily basis here.

I'm hoping this topic will be easier to find for people needing help and for those with the knowledge to help if they are so inclined.
