Dear friends, we began the year sharing with the international magic community our latest "52 Weeks Project", where we share each week, for free, a new, curated, unknown (or very little known) book on magic.

As I don't want to bump the thread in "Latest & Greatest" I opened this new thread where I can hopefully share the weekly updates without upsetting anyone.

This last week we have a special "historic" book:

Walter Gibson was one of the great "talents" the world of magic produced: not only he obtained "celebrity status" by creating his famous "Shadow" character, not only was he a tremendously prolific writer, but he was actually one of the most creative magicians of the 20th Century.

Gibson was "the" guy to hire when famous magicians like Thurston and Blackstone wanted to write and publish "their own books" (Gibson ghostwrote for them).

During the first half of the 1920's decade, Gibson wrote a column for Philadelphia's "Evening Public Ledger" newspaper. Originally intended for only a few weeks, it ran for 5 years! The BEST material from the run was eventually compiled in this little booklet called "After Dinner Tricks".

Although originally a beginner's book, there IS interesting and useful material inside, such as:

"Telling Cards from Backs" - probably the BEST peek for a card being held in the hand (face down). You can perform a little "reading with the fingertips" routine with it - people will never figure it out.

"A Divination" - mentalists have exhausted the old gag of writing "No" on a paper, then asking "Can I possibly know what you are thinking?". Replace that old chestnut with this one instead. (Still corny, but fun).

"Coin Dissolves into Air" - a clever subtlety to add to a coin vanish used by no other than Tamariz himself.

"The Rejected Soldiers" - a nice little bit to introduce the jokers before any effect

"Rapid Addition to Make 100" - if you can commit to memorize a few numbers you can play a little addition game and NO ONE will beat you ever - "proof" of your incredible mental powers.

INCLUDES SAMPLE REPRODUCTIONS OF THE NEWSPAPERS WITH THE TRICKS IN THEM

Book #17 in the 52 Weeks Project:

"Leaves" From Hilliard Notebooks by Floyd Thayer

John "Northern" Hilliard became immortalized as the author of one of the most important magic books of the 20th Century: Greater Magic.

He was a very successful writer and journalist who toured the world with Thurston for 10 years, and thanks to that association was able to meet the greatest magicians of his time - and obtain their secrets.

About two decades before that, T. Nelson Down published one of the most important magic books of the era in 1909: "The Art of Magic" - ghost-written by Hilliard. The book was the "Tarbell" of that era and became an instant classic.

Between the publishing of those 2 great books, Hilliard published a number of articles in Floyd Thayer's "Magical Bulletin" with material that was not included in The Art of Magic, and was reserved "for the second book". Those articles were afterward compiled in this little booklet and published for the enjoyment of magicians the world over.

CONTENTS

Foreword

A personal note by way of introduction

THE TRIPLE MYSTERY - 3 selected cards found by the spectators. Impromptu.

THE CHINESE RINGS - Special handlings for the Linking Rings

THE QUICK OR THE DEAD - a complete script and presentation for a psychological mystery to discover the "dead". A lesson in how to elevate a simple effect to a complete theatrical experience.

ROLL YOUR OWN - "tobacco" and a cigarette paper pushed into the hand turn into a real cigarette - hands shown empty.

Every effect is very thoroughly explained and described.
