Hello all,

Like the subject says, I'm looking for a copy of Jim rainho's half in half (which doest seem to be available digitally or second hand).

In essence it's a half folded in a paper, put in an envelope which is cut in half, and then the spectator can dump out the two quarters. Great for kids and hopefully something easy for my kids little fingers.

Hi Magnolious,

I don't know this trick, but Karl Fulves has a similar one in one of his "self-working" books. Pretty sure it's either the "coins" book or the "paper" book. A dollar bill is placed in an envelope and the envelope is cut in half. When the envelope is reopened, the bill is gone but one half-dollars spills from each half of the cut envelope.

Hi Bob,

I'll search it out! Thanks for giving me somewhere to look.

My pleasure, Magnolious. I looked up the trick; it's in Self-Working Coin Magic, p. 72: "Half and Half."

I haven't performed the trick, because I don't want to be giving away half-dollars, which are scarce these days! (I suppose I could just write 50 cents on a pair of cardboard disks, but that doesn't seem as effective, even if the dollar is Monopoly money.)

So if you find out how to turn 50 cents into two quarters, I'll be interested.

Keeping things simple here (but no simpler) Smile …Try doing a simple spellbound move to change a half dollar to two quarters. That would even work with a folded dollar bill being changed to two halves. Smile

Interesting idea, Mb. That sounds like a really startling trick. Color changes are pretty, but I like that you've provided a reason for the change.

Hi Bob,

I actually flipped through the book and read further, I think the effect I'm looking for can be done using rebound (#82) from Self-Working Coin magic with a little bit of creativity it would allow the small envelope to be sealed, but still retain the half dollar while dumping out two quarters.

@MB I for some reason really like the idea of "cutting" the coin in half and turning it into two quarters. similar to the envelope trick Bob posted by cutting a dollar bill in half. Especially for a much shorter, and younger crowd Smile

Thanks for the reference to "Rebound," Magnolious. Creative thinking on your part to connect it to the "cutting" effect you first asked about.

When I first read your note to Mb, I misread it and thought that after the half-dollar was cut in half the result would be two half-half-dollars! (I. e., half of a 50-cent piece and the other half). That actually strikes me as another interesting presentation. Somehow the flimsy scissors cut through the paper envelope *and* the metal. I wonder if anyone makes galfs like that -- halves of half-dollars.

Sankey used to sell a coin like that but when I just went to include the link I discovered he no longer does.
I'm sure any gaff maker could provide one for you fairly easy - or just get a hacksaw and some sandpaper. It's much simpler to make than something like a Karate coin or folding coin.

There is a site that sells special coins that can be broken in half. They are not made of traditional currency, but designed I guess for a couple to each have half. But you could make a trick with them to break and restore. I will try to find the site.
It is the Shire mint. Here is the coin:

Thanks for taking the time, Mike. I do think the trick would be more effective with traditional currency... I'll check on ebay; maybe someone has the Sankey half that tonsofquestions mentioned.

Later: No luck on ebay.
