A few years ago, I was out on the golf course with some clients. Just before teeing, one of the players from the flite in front said, "You guys better watch it, you are playing with a magician!" and he proceeded to tee off. While waiting ,I turned to my flite mates and offered to do a card trick. I went through some cards and asked one of them to say stop anytime and remember the value of the card, just the value. I then spread the deck and asked the next guy to pick a card, and tear it up in fourths. As he was ripping the card, I said please do this mentally. I will never forget the sorry look on the second guy's face as well as the chuckles of the other mates. I said that's ok, since it is partially ripped, you might as well proceed to ripping it in fourths. I took the four pieces and gave him one piece as a reciept. The balance was then burned by the third guy.
By that time it was our turn to tee off. They were anxious as to how the trick was going to end, and Iall I said was ....that's it! Let's play some golf.
I overheard onf of them say , as I was teeing up, "This is probably some kind of a ritual, to put a hex on our shots" . I said ..."I heard that! Nothing like that at all" . I promised to finish it later. So off we went.

On the sixth hole, just before teeing , I said to the first guy, "We're on the sixth hole, and I feel something funny. Did you stop at the number six back on the first hole ? Remember the card where you stopped at?" He said ..."Yeah that's wierd! I was just thinking about it just before you mentioned it" (somedays the magic gods are on your side all the way). I just said .." Iknew I was picking up something".

We proceeded to play hole number six. We were on our aproach shot to the green and I said I have a feeling one of us is going to have a birdie. Sure enough my second player was set up for a birdie putt. Since he was farthest from the hole he took the first putt. He missed it by an inch. He said..." so much for the birdie" and we let him tap it in. I maintained that he was going to have a birdie and he gave me the "funk" face and said he only made par. I said look and see. In the hole , as he was retrieving the ball , he found a card rolled up. He said in a histerical manner... "NO WAY MAN< NO WAY!" I simply said "YES WAY! unroll it and see what it is." Sure enough it was the chosen card with one corner missing. The second player took out the reciept/corner that he kept and it matched the the card perfectly up to the tiny tear that was quite imperfect. The third guy kept mumbling..."I freakin burned it!".I then mentioned the story of the phoenix bird, and now he knew why he indeed had a birdie despite the par.

I won that day! Their concentration to the game was permanently misdirected.

I have done many effects in my life , but this golfing experience remains to be the best in my memories.
