I've started doing woodworking, and thinking it would be fun to build some handmade tricks (not huge stage illusions, more like close-up and parlor), especially boxes and frames and the like.

One idea I had was Stewart James's "SEFALALJIA," spirit box. Any other ideas, for older classic effects that use wooden props? I say older, because I don't want to steal anyone's intellectual property, though I don't plan to market anything at this time.

I'm not looking for secrets, I can do the research of finding books, etc.

Nest of Boxes in it's various forms always seems popular. There's a wealth of information available in the literature.

Silk cabby

The box that makes the ball in Stratospere disappear is a cool thing.

On a similar note flip over box.

This photo shows just two silks, but the box can take a fairly large silk load , also spring flowers, latex fruit , etc.

Die Box. There are several plans (with measurements) floating around. I have a few of those plans. I'd be glad to email them to you if you send me a PM.

I like the style of die where it is a white die with black spots and heavy blacked outlined edges.

I like this one by Old Time Magic Co. (circa 1970s) .

I have one of these by Old Time Magic Co. The only thing I don't like about it is that the design of the front doors prevents doing a very clever move with the die (when placing it into the box) that Gene Anderson shows in his die box routine on his Penguin Live lecture (it is also in his book called "The Book" (great book. highly recommended). Anderson got the move from Percy Abbott. It's a subtle thing, but worth considering. I would also suggest taking a careful look at the Roy Benson die box routine (based on the Robert Gunther die box routine that Charlie Miller published in Genii magazine.) Levent reconstructs Benson's die box routine in his book "Roy Benson By Starlight" . The Gunther/Benson routine requires having two of the double-door gimmicks built in to the box.

Choose the tricks that would suit your performing style and audience, unless you are just building for fun, which is fine of course, I can see why it would be fun. Or choose tricks that are hard to find or are expensive to buy.

A friend had a die box that used a pack of cigarettes in place of a die. I'd really like to see an updated version that would work for years. A phone wouldn't work because the technology keeps changing. Any ideas?

Michael Baker has sometimes made a version with a box of raisins. http://www.themagiccompany.com/cat_main.html

Abbott's used to make a die box type apparatus with a cigarette pack. (No built-in "thud" because a cigarette pack doesn't make noise.)

Ver since it was invented , about every 7 years or so someone suggests that the Rubik's Cube was just a "fad" that has run it's course ... BUT , here we are 50 years after it's invention (in 1974 , by Erno Rubik) and the Rubik's Cube is still a popular puzzle/game and audiences are more likely to look at it as an "ordinary object" than a over-size die (although those are also made as a lawn game , with 4" dice). I think using the Rubik's Cube for the Die Box effect works fine.

Mel Babcock developed a unique "Rubik's Cube Solving Box" based upon his wonderful line of die boxes. This was an idea from one of his customers.
