A performer who does an outstanding job with this effect is Jonathan Neal. See this video starting at 1:42 mark:

Jonathan does it best, that's for sure. I think if you learned the method you would just need to practice it a few million times to get the feel for that handling. He makes it look like magic. I spoke with him about it and he attributed his smoothness with the effect to repetition. He's on the forums though, look him up and get it straight from him. He's a great guy and very generous with his knowledge.

Hi! Thank you all for your approval and interest in this effect. Frankly, this is in Tarbell (Vol 1 and vol 6 if I recall correctly). If I've added anything to it, it is in the styling and accenting musical beats timed with the effect. I've been doing it professionally sine around 1978, and I learned it about 10 years before that! When I see others do it, I can tell those who copied it from me, as they often include specific 'bits' that are unique to me.
My inspiration was seeing it performed by the late (and great) Dick Gustafson, who featured it in his nightclub candle theme act. unfortunately, it isn't in the video clip of his Ed Sullivan appearance. I've never thought to put this on DVD as it is so well explained in print. |
